But why did they buy so much celery?

It's not just the celery. The bag of groceries is moreorless the same in each painting. She's a woman who knows what she likes I guess.
Edit: It's clear though that she does not like underwear that fits
The underwear fits her ankles fine.
The fit looks a bit loose to me, but I think baggy underwear was just the style at the time.
Celery was the mid 50s baguette
Foul stuff. Can't abide it.
Celery is an old fashioned afrodisiacum, I'm guessing that's why
