Pre-Match | New Mexico United @ Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC | September 23, 2023 5:00 PM MDT

On Wednesday New Mexico United played the #1 club in the USL Championship Western Conference to a draw. This evening United (note to Sacramento's announcers: no 'The' ) plays the Eastern Conference's current #1 team, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. Pittsburgh's home record is 11-1-3. Truly, not an easy path to climb to the playoffs.

Last time these two clubs played was in 2022, where they played to a 1-1 draw at the lab. I don't think we'll be seeing any draws in this match. New Mexico United needs three points, so I think we are going to see everything, including the kitchen sink tossed in the direction of Pittsburgh's goal.

So again, we are playing against a club who on offense seems pretty close to us. It is just the defense that is more locked down. Our pass success rate is better. We're better on long passes. We've won more fouls than them, however we have more yellow cards. If we can break down their defense and keep them out of the box, we have a shot at this.

I believe we should have Portillo back from a yellow card accumulation suspension. He should be nice and rested.

Ref for the match: Elvis Osmanovic. His stats for this season:

USLC 16 78 0 1 6
USOC 2 9 0 0 0
MLSNP 3 14 0 0 4
NWSL 2 6 0 0 0

We previously had this ref for the July 8th match against Detroit. And before that in May 2022 against Indy 11 and Oct 23 2022 against Sacramento in the Playoffs.
