How do you use battery diodes in practice?
I feel like I know what they do on paper but I'm not sure when it would be a good time to actually use them.

You can use them to have back-up energy in case if you mess up main source of it or it get destroyed or something like this
used to isolate power to only the most critical components when an emergency happens and you suddenly run short of it
