Crossposted Content from Reddit

I have a bot to help bring in fresh content. Posts on Reddit are being crossposted here. Don’t worry, each will only appear once, and comments on these posts in Reddit will not be crossposted.

Feel free to discuss this content at will in the relevant posts. If you want to give suggestions, notice any issues or bugs, need to tell me this is a horrible idea, or have other thoughts and opinions on this, write your thoughts here in this thread.

  • Hi, I saw this cross-posted content on the Local feed and I came here to block this community.

We shouldn't be doing this. It's essentially just spam, and if a community can't survive on it's on content then it is better of not existing.

    • Thanks for commenting! For much of the content you've seen in the past few hours, yeah, there was a glitch in the bot. That should be fixed shortly. Feel free to check things out again in a day or so and I think all should be good.

As for having the bot at all, I've been involved in a number of different discussions about such things so far, and opinion seems very divided on if it's a good idea or not. In any case, for this community this is a temporary measure only to bring content here while the dust settles. I'm at about 65% so far on people liking this as opposed to not liking it. If that changes then it'll be gone for sure. That's assuming it's working right and not spamming people's feeds! Sorry about that!!

  • I'd recommend giving the bot a little bio in its profile so it's clear what it does and who it's for.

  • Judging based off a chunk of the posts copied over so far it's kinda weird to get recommendations / seeking / help finding posts when there is no OP to respond. Is there a way to filter some of those out? Or is that the vast majority of the posts anyway.

    • Yes, that's a good point. The person asking the question will never see any responses here. As of right now the bot I'm using does not have any capability to filter those out. I could delete them manually I suppose, or leave them and just let people discuss them anyway.

  • As a long time poster on r/printSF, I'd rather not see the cross post bot at all. Let's just let this community grow organically. Those of us still willing to discuss on Reddit can discuss there as well.

I scrolled through the posts looking for things made by local users. There's one post by Ben Bova, and the rest are the bot. If I'm looking for discussion with people here, I effectively have to blocm the bot.

Side note: I didn't know you existed until today. I've also set up [email protected] and [email protected]. I suspect our prospective communities will overlap once further established. I'll link here from the sidebars of those communities to help a bit.

But please turn off the bot ;)

Thanks for the feedback. From the comments received so far, your vote brings it a bit closer to 50/50 (it was very strongly pro bot for the first bit). Your timing is apropos, as the bot will be taking a bit of a planned vacation regardless in a few days and we'll see where things go from there. I too want to see the community grow by itself, and for people to bring and discuss content here. Obviously, the bot was to bring over some content into an essentially empty community to begin with to begin to spur discussion. And while there was some discussion happening on some of the posts, it was very little. But it was intended as a temporary measure regardless. We'll see how it goes over the next two or three weeks.

That's great. I will add those communities to the sidebar here as well. Thanks!

      • Excellent! I'm sure we'll see more of each other, haha. Go Jets Go ;)

  • There's just soo many of them. When I do a Subscribed New refresh of Lemmy I'm just seeing an unending list of these. Is it possible to just do like the top ten of the day?
