Oh yeah, great tools. The old mechanical ones, though?Just as good. According to people I know, anyway. The cheap digital ones in particular are still great for 3D printing stuff but not necessarily actually as precise as a high-quality old analogue caliper.
they're probably far from as acurate as an old school caliper. it's a fairly new thing that cheap calipers (digital and otherwise) have started getting made.
that said, for 3d printing...the cheapos are usually "good enough"

Really interesting just how accurate they are, and they don't require professional calibration over time (from what I understand).
