Would anyone be interested in a cane that could sense things further away?
Hello!
My first post, so sry if im doing something wrong.
So last year, i got an inflammation in my eyes, im now back to almost normal, but for a while i was almost blind. It got me thinking of ways i would be able to adapt to the world in case i never got my sight back.
I have a background in electrical engineering and i now work as a developer in the field of small embedded IoT devices. I dont know if this thing already exists, but i had this thought that i could make a cane attachment that you put on the cane or just a short cane, that would then send out a sonar ping to see how far away the thing you are pointing the cane at is and vibrate the cane with different intensity depending on how close it would be. I could imagine myself getting good with such a device and be able to "see" the world around me by swinging it back and fourth.
But i dont know, and i dont need it anymore, so im asking you guys what you thing about the idea?
There are many similar devices already in existence. Try googling “blind cane attachment sonar radar infrared“ and check out the results. FWIW, it seems to me the three bigger issues with this are (1) cost, (2) weight, and (3) figuring out an interface that gives you useful and intelligible info
