The video at the bottom does a good job talking about the project fears. That said, on the scale of whole civilizations, projects like this need to move forward, and they need to move forward in our own backyards. The alternatives are: they happen in someone else's backyard with fewer regulations, more environmental damage, and worse outcomes. Or, we never move off of oil because NIMBYism locally prevented us from developing the technology we needed to save our atmosphere on a global scale.
Everything you use in your day to day lives was either grown or mined. Including the server this community is running on, and the device you're using to read this. Silica mining is close to the safest kind. If projects that are nearly pristine in terms of their environmental impact cannot go forward, then how on earth will we ever get projects for copper, lithium, or other harder to mine elements moving.
End rant.
I guess I should be more careful. Someone gone and made me a mod and now my bias is showing ;)
