Mirror/start c/Transgender_Surgeries or other subs here?
Hi all,
I’m a Reddit refugee and I’m wondering if we could consider mirroring subs like r/Transgender_Surgeries, r/TransDIY and r/estrogel here (or if not maybe another instance)
If you’re not aware Reddit has made it clear they will probably deploy tools to shut these subreddits down in the nearish future. This has lead us to start looking elsewhere and personally I’m in favour of getting people into the fediverse.
It seems obvious to me the main issue we have with getting people onto the fediverse is momentum. In light of that do you think that we could mirror some of the content from those subs here? Maybe also if we have a bot like this one to seed the content https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/21662525
I for one would be happy to start encouraging people to move here by regularly posting my responses to people’s questions on here with info I know on Lemmy and then linking to my response in the subreddit so they take a peek.
I’ve been researching surgeries for well over half a decade by now and have some surgeries myself so I think people will come if people like me start putting valuable content here.
My issue here is I’m new to the fediverse and probably not the best to take something like this up. I also am working on learning how to set up my own server for the first time and ultimately help others in my network around the world do the same so idk if I’m the best to lead that type of initiative.
It does seem we need someone though and the leader of the Transgender_Surgeries subreddit is too burned out to migrate it (understandably so)
The short version is, that I’m not keen on a bot that just replicates content from reddit (the fediverse has a long history with those, and lots of people have lots of very strong opinions, which overshadow the problem the bot is ostensibly trying to solve).
However, any and all of those groups are welcome here officially or unofficially. It may involve manually posting and pinning a lot of the content and resources from the original subs, but as long as that is done with consent, we’re happy for it to be here.
Honestly, if you want them here, and you have the support of the existing reddit mods, I would suggest creating the groups here and getting them going. You can always add other moderators, and even hand the groups over to someone else if you want to step away.

Maybe if this instance feels comfortable hosting those communities, it would be useful to talk to those communities' Reddit moderators directly see if they are interested in treating Lemmy as a fallback community in the case of being banned, the way 196 did when they were banned from Reddit?
To my mind that would be even more valuable than just cross-posting Reddit content to Lemmy.
Do you know who I would even talk to in order to find out if this instance is comfortable hosting them? In the long run I am working on setting up my own server but that won’t help if the sub is banned tomorrow for example
I would certainly try to talk to the admins, particularly @Ada, who will probably see your post here at some point.
I have talked to the mod at Transgender_Surgeries and the vibe is they’ve worked tirelessly for years doing a thankless job and are too burned out but are open to others taking the lead—probably more likely they would add it to a list of resources if someone else takes the lead on this
I agree with getting off of simply mirroring Reddit content but I think we need a bridge in order to get people posting here. Like if I reply with helpful info here then people have follow up questions maybe they’ll ask me here instead of there type of thing & slowly migrate over
Maybe instead identifying relevant contributors to the subreddit and reaching out to them individually to see how they feel, and then if there is consent and desire, coordinating with the mods to add a link to the lemmy community as the fallback?
I do think there is value in copying the various trans wikis onto Lemmy, though - the knowledge there is quite valuable. Not sure how wikis would work on Lemmy, though - maybe just a series of posts edited by moderators in a locked community?
