Biden signs anti-hazing bill backed by WA parents
Five years later, the story of a Washington college student who died in a fraternity hazing ritual lives on in several laws, including a new federal measure.
Last week, on Christmas Eve, their efforts paid off when President Joe Biden signed the Stop Campus Hazing Act. The law requires all colleges and universities to publicly disclose hazing incidents, making them a separate category in the crime statistics colleges must report. It also mandates the creation of prevention and education programs to help students understand the dangers of hazing.
I can’t help but notice that it doesn’t actually ban the practice.
Maybe this will allow the local PD to make more arrests?
Pretty much every university has strict “rules” against hazing. The problem is, that none of them seem to care to enforce any of them. This results in none of it getting reported, or very difficult to report and verify.
Then, of course, the cops don’t really wanna do much about it, either.
For hazing to end, the schools, themselves, need to step up and take more direct action.
