Best Way to Catch Up on Story?

What's the best way to catch up on the story of WoW? In-game, preferably. I finished up in Zandalar and now I'm in Nazjatar and... Who the hell is MOTHER? Why is there a big-ass sword jammed into Silithus? I feel like the 0-to-hero path thru Zandalar skipped... A lot of steps. So what's the best way for me to play catch-up?

EDIT: For reference, before this year the last time I seriously played WoW was WotLK.

  • I know you said in game preferably, but I do think it’s worth giving a shout out to Nobbel on YouTube; his lore videos are really engaging and thorough, and you can often find videos on specific topics (like the story of Sylvanas) where he compiles history from several sources into a video. It’s worth a look if you’re really interested in the lore, because for better or worse the game itself sometimes only touches on events that have more depth in other sources.

    • Ahh, I love his channel! I spent quite a bit of time watching his videos before I actually picked the game back up. I'm primarily looking to experience the story myself in-game as my character. Going from Zandalar to Nazjatar felt more than a little jarring with a whole lot happening in the span of a few minutes that I had no personal connection to in-game, if that makes any sense. It felt very disjointed.

I want to experience it, not just learn about it, you know?

  • If you stopped in WotLK I want to say start at Cataclysm and play through Legion, but that is a serious time investment. I think you'd be OK just playing through Legion, though there are some things it draws from prior expansions as well. Specifically the return of Gul'dan in WoD.

    • I'm not afraid of the time investment, fortunately. I'm just looking for the best way to get up to speed. If the answer is "play the game" so be it! Lol. I'm guessing the best way to experience those stories is through Chromie time? How does that work, anyway?

      • If you've hit level 60 I don't believe you can use Chromie time. Since you mentioned you've played through BfA I'm going to assume you're in your 50s, so I would just say use Wowhead to locate the intro quests for Cataclysm and start there. I hope that's not too much of a cap-out answer.

  • I don't honestly know that you can do it in-game unless you are just very deliberate about playing all the content in release order. Which would take ages. If you look up Nobbel87 on ye olde youtubes they have storyline recap videos and explanations. Much faster and definitely more forgiving than the in-game struggle.
