It looks like The Sims 5, also known has Project Rene, has been canceled. This information was allegedly spotted in a LinkedIn profile.

Paradox canceled their Sims game, as did EA now?

Weird that both these companies are so open to Para-Lives eating their lunch in a niche market that is hungry for a new Sims game and tired of EA's old model.
There goes the one EA game I was willing to pay for. I guess some indie studio will end up making something better. Like what happened to the SimCity franchise.
- There was a studio working on a Sims competitor and their game got cancelled earlier in the year.
  
  Did you mean The Sims? May have been "Life by You", published by the same people who made Cities Skylines. They even had the lead designer for The Sims 2 on the team too, so it would have had a pretty good chance of being a faithful interpretation without all the excessive DLC.
