Question: is there a way to make sort by new on the homepage be the default?

I can't find an option for it…

If you go into your account settings, you can change the default sorting method. At the very least, I can do it from Jerboa. I haven't looked at the web version this morning, but I'm sure there's a similar setting there.

I have unfortunately not yet found a way to set it in Lemmy directly :(
