what is the shelf looking thing at the rear of a Venetian gondola? [SOLVED]
At the back of a Venetian gondola there is a small shelf, what is this for? It's not the full width of the stern

For the gondolier to put his back foot upon when he has to row hard. Gives him more leverage on the oar. I think.
