Cats are fantastic companions, but there is no denying the damage they do ecologically. I think the ACT is moving in the right direction by progressively introducing laws to make all cats contained.
It's a better outcome for wildlife and the cats themselves.
Do you have a link to the ACTs approach? Quite keen to see how they've gone about it and reading the primary legislation is a bit dry for me
I would be keen to see cats moved into the same category as rabbits. Practically speaking, you'd grandfather the existing pets, but once their natural lifespans were over, no new ones could be registered as pets.
I don't really agree. Cats that are contained inside should be allowed. However there should be trapping programs etc. in bushlands and big fines for if cats are outside.
Domestic rabbits also aren't really an issue, the wild populations are well and truly established and the types of rabbit are more suited to living in the wild anyway.
I'm thinking of making an necklace saying:
The next time I see this cat, it's going straight to the pound. If I see it again, you won't see it again.
Then attach it to a stray cat that I do find. Hopefully that gets the owner to keep it indoors.
I don't think you're using "stray" the way most people do.
If it's a stray, it doesn't have an owner to keep it indoors.
If you're dealing with a pet that's been allowed to roam, I'd recommend contacting your local Council for their advice on what to do. I've heard stories of Council giving out cat traps for people to use to catch cats on their property.

I mean, if it's got someone to see it, then after it goes to the pound they'll probably just...contact the owners and return it. Might be a fee or something, not sure. Taking the cat to the pound doesn't necessarily mean the owner will never see it again. The shock of having to do that though should hopefully be enough to get them to keep their pet indoors.
We have a dingo having around our neighbourhood. I'm hoping that will take care of the cats
