I literally signed on to new 5G contract with Vodaphone last night after finishing my 24 month Three contract. Had I waited a day I probably would have stuck with 3 and save £10 a month as well as having Vodaphone's better coverage.
I think this is a bad thing for UK mobile industry, it's going to limit choice on a consumer level.
Yeah it is, we now have 4 networks, EE, Virgin02, BT, Voda3 controlling 98% of the UKs broadband and telecommunications infrastructure. Fastly becoming uncompetitive. We heading to like they do it in America.
Our regulators have shown their teeth recently though, which I think is a great thing, and it may be blocked.
What we really need is to have a common infrastructure, so everyone gets the same coverage. Then let the providers offer deals and incentives to get their customers. Just like we have with power etc.
Yeah, that is similar to how the landline telephone network runs - OpenReach owns and maintains the network and has to provide access to everyone else.
A single high quality mobile network would make sense, and reduce duplication. But the Government went the monopolies route of selling frequencies to telecoms providers to build out their own networks to encourage competition. It works to a point but is wasteful.
To be honest, if it were nationalised, I would be seriously concerned over the government's initiative to invest properly in it, just like with everything else that they don't invest in.
