Disclaimer: I'm an accountant who knows nothing about federation, hosting, coding, etc. Just a really simple old-ish person looking for a good alternative to Reddit. :-)
I've been using Jerboa but out of nowhere today it just stopped working. No matter what I click on, I get a message that says "Value <html> of type java.lang.String cannot be conve....". (It cuts off there.)
Even using a browser, I haven't been able to access Lemmy.ml all day - I get a 502 "bad gateway" error. But sites like isitupdown.com say that Lemmy.ml is UP right now. I tried logging into communities that I have joined through Lemmy.ml, but the logins just hang, and nothing ever happens.
I had also joined Sopuli.xyz early on, so I logged in there to be able to create a post. But none of the communities I joined through Lemmy.ml seem to be connected to my Sopuli.xyz login.
I have slowly been getting the hang of using Jerboa but honestly the whole federation thing is an utter mystery to me and I'm just super confused and bummed right now.
Anyway I guess my question is: Is Lemmy.ml down right now or is it just me? If it's just me, what do I do now?
Lemmy.ml is on and off today, I believe it is continuously being overloaded by users, as well as them migrating to a better server to support people. For now, just assume that the server is overloaded if you cannot access it.
I had been getting that error too, on and off, seems to be on their end. they did upgrade the server hardware recently so maybe something is being a bit dodgy since then here's a post about it
I'm able to access lemmy.ml communities when I'm on my own instance (lemmy.sascamooch.com), but I get a 502 error when I try to access lemmy.ml directly. I'm guessing the web front end is down while the federation services are still working.
The big Lemmy instances have definitely had some big growing pains this week thanks to Rexxit.
Not saying that at all & i agree. Just an observation. it's early days & problems are getting fixed, waiting a small while seems to fix most things at the moment, it's already better than a couple of days ago for me
