Thoughts on VRChat and long-term profitability?
There's a conversation happening across Bluesky right now regarding The Metaverse, Decentraland, and VRChat and their longevity. I didn't realize vrchat was funded purely by venture capitalists right now and I'm not sure if that paints a dark picture for it's future?
Can someone enlighten me as to whether vrchat is also going to inevitably end up trying to milk every last drop out of it's users in a twitter or reddit-like death spiral?
I'm trying not to let it get to me but with the current state of various social media and the grips of late stage capitalism, it's hard to imagine vrchat magically surviving without finding a clever way to monetize that doesn't alienate us.
I've never used vrchat specifically, but it's hard to imagine it or anything like it right now (specifically thinking of metaverse) will become profitable enough quickly enough to justify its existence to investors. Until vr becomes the "killer app" and someone breaks through that ease of access and affordability barrier there won't be enough users. Eventually there will be an iPhone-like entry to the vr hardware world and suddenly vr will become as ubiquitous as television sets
