  • I recently went bouldering for the first time, it was really fun (though I really suck at it). Any advice on getting better?

    • why did you suck? we can provide advice for specific problems, otherwise we're just guessing what you're doing wrong.

Maybe take some time to figure out what you're doing before you hit the wall, or rely more on your legs than your arms.

    • Well just do it again if you liked it. It comes with doing it often. Sometimes boulder places have classes to level up one level and teach some technique. Build some strength but it comes with doing it more often.

Best practices: keep the arms long, pull out of your back and not your biceps. Get good fitting shoes. Stand on the tip of your foot and not with your whole foot on the boulder.

Don't overdo it, take it slowly and enjoy your time :)

    • Practice.

I found it helps somewhat to identify where your particular weak points are, which are often literal. It might be flexibility, upper or lower body strength, or just overall endurance. If you really want to get into it you can make yourself a campus board or similar to hang up somewhere at home.

A lot of people hyperfixate on training grip strength for both bouldering and more traditional climbing. I've not found that to be terribly beneficial myself, at least compared to most other stuff.

Learning how to fall off and land on your crash pad is also one, and crucially getting over the hesitancy in doing so. More technical climbs will inevitably require taking some risks to succeed -- lunging at holds that are not quite within reach, that sort of thing -- which you'll never be able to pull off if you're flinching from the possibility of not making it and encountering some gravity.

That's just my two cents, anyhow. I've climbed a lot of stuff over the years but I'm no pro.

    • Something I have noticed in beginners is that they do not use the wall to balance, If you put your body towards one side you can place your foot on the other side to hold yourself
