Ubisoft’s XIM detection sees “major reduction” in Rainbow Six Siege cheaters

For the uninitiated: XIM is a tool used to play console shooters with a mouse and keyboard and fake them as controllers, essentially giving them an unfair advantage in competitive shooters on console.

Ubisoft implemented a super effective way to counter XIM called "Mousetrap" a while ago. It slowly adds more and more input delay if you're playing with a XIM and tons of people have been sharing clips of players clearly trying to use it and having a 200ms+ delay in their actions and playing like they're drunk. It's quite funny.

  • Is it really an unfair advantage now that crossplay exists? Like, I get it for the people who have it turned off, but it doesn't seem so bad when you consider that feature now. Plus when we look at fighting games, we don't say that fightsticks are cheating, or hit boxes. It seems more like Ubi is limiting ways to play instead. Plus, what kind of effect is it having on the accessibility of the game?

For clarity I don't have any opinion one way or the other, I've always played on PC. Just curious about these different aspects.

    • Yes, it's still unfair. Ranked on consoles has crossplay disabled since aiming with a mouse is much more accurate than a stick, I wouldn't really compare it to fightsticks since they're not that different from controllers. In terms of accessibility, they specifically targeted mouse emulators. Other accessibility controllers still work.

      • Okay, then it would make sense to set up mousetrap on ranked matches.

I mean no offense when saying this, but your inexperience shows, because there is a world of difference between the ways fightsticks (otherwise known as an arcadesticks) versus controllers make there inputs, it makes the feel of each very unique, you also conveniently skipped over hitboxes which essentially map the movement inputs to buttons spread across your four fingers in essence making in similar to how you'd play fighting games on keyboard for example, but in practice it's way different, many top level players only use hitbox now for example. Yet we see no bans from tournaments for these various ways to play. You do in fact receive an edge when using these various methods, most typically like this: hitbox > fightstick > controller. Also, I've known many a player that play on par with KBM using controllers.

I'm all for fucking up cheaters btw, I just don't exactly know if this constitutes as cheating. I mean, what are Ubi doing to combat turbo controllers? And controllers with built in cheats?

        • Sorry but a lot of what you are describing is pure bullshit imo. First, a big part of the reason hitbox is seen by a lot of people as the superior device in the fgc is because of how it filters inputs, and in fact SF6 Capcom has already banned hitbox with a socd cleaner that detected up+down as up, which gives an unfair advantage not intended and that cant be prevented by the software ingame unless they restrict it to only official products. Fightsticks vs controllers is pure preference, to the point that the controller is seen sometimes as better due to the no travel distance of a dpad vs a stick and many many top players nowadays play with controllers, see sonic fox and a ton of others. If you dont see how using xim to play with a mouse in a platform not intended to i think you just have a problem.

          • I don't particularly like your tone. You can make the argument that controller or stick is based on preference, but the truth is there's a clear bias towards one over the other. And what you described with the hit box is literally cheating. Capcom as you said haven't banned the official products, and thus my point still stands. Plus it seems you've conveniently forgotten that crossplay exists.

Like I said, I could care less if they ban MKB on console, but they may as well do it on PC too if it's considered cheating.

            • Lmao, i would like to see that clear bias, i would recommend you to read my comment again and both the articles and tweets i linked because i think you are completely missing the point of the whole argument

              • Agree to disagree I suppose.

                • Lol, maybe it would have been a good moment to go back, read the conversation from the first post and see why you started trying to pass your made up arguments as facts and saying to people how their "inexperience shows" when you were just making up stuff. But sure haha, agree to disagree.

                  • How proudly you say that my arguments are made up. It's very clear that you won't change your bigoted view. Enjoy being my first blocked user :D

                    • Hahaha, yeah i posted articles and referenced actual players to back up my argument, you just made shit up lmao
