I haven't seen any New Trek since the first season of Discovery. What exactly is going on in this scene?

The ship encounters an evolved tardigrade, which they use to warp around instantly. She sees that every time they warp it hurts the beast, and the pain she figured out how to inflict on it via the warp manifests here
I remember a big tardigrade so maybe I did see this and just forgot all about it.
