Video: Sen. Tim Kaine Says Not Electing Hillary Clinton President Was the “Biggest Failure in My Life”; Says He Got “doctoral-level education in misogyny and mistreatment of women” in 2016 Campaign
Sen. Tim Kaine spoke not once but twice at the Women's Summit earlier today - first to the everyone, second in a forum for candidates. See below for video and a few highlights from his remarks, some o
I don’t doubt that any of this is true. It must be said though that right or wrong, politics is a popularity contest to a large degree and Hillary is hard to like.
We need to evolve past that aspect of politics for sure and I pray for a day where policy trumps (har!) popularity but that day is not today.
Her utter condescension in her Q&A with young voters was the death knell for her campaign IMHO.
This. I won't argue that women don't face uphill challenges in arenas that are mostly male, but Hillary didn't lose in 2016 due to misogyny. She lost because (a) conservatives were much more motivated to come out and vote in the wake of 8 years under Obama, (b) the DNC divided her potential voter base by intentionally screwing over Bernie Sanders' chances, and (c) she's nowhere near as charismatic as her husband or Trump.
I voted for her in 2016, but only because I didn't want Trump to win. I still remember the weird mix of feelings I felt when it was announced that Trump won. I was at once horrified that he had gotten himself elected to the most powerful position in the world and giddy that she had lost to him of all people. I hated that he won, but part of me felt this weird form of schadenfreude at her losing, because I really didn't like her.
Her policy and experience and qualifications are exemplary. Her personality is utterly grating. You actually wonder if it’s that hard to just not be as utterly unlikeable as she is but alas.
The whole ‘it’s my turn’ aspect to her campaign in the wake of Obama was just so terrible that it beggars belief that she could have actual PR people working for her.
At times it is almost as if she was saying: ‘you’d elect a PoC but not a white woman!’ As if white women are somehow superior to black people? SMMFH man. Even if it was never said, the fact that that could be read into the subtext here indicates just how badly the DNC dropped the ball to lose to Trump.
Oh, man, I had forgotten how heavily her campaign PR leaned into the whole "I deserve this because I'm a woman" vibe. My mother was really pissed she lost and chalked it up 100% to sexism. I remember having a conversation with her about it and saying I bet there were more people who voted for her because of her gender than against her for it. God, she ran such a cringy campaign.
Compare Obama to Hillary for a second. Compare Obama to pretty much anyone in politics in the last 20 years.
Unfair as it is, that is what it takes to beat prejudice and oppression for minorities in politics. Be they gender minorities, racial minorities, etc.
You literally need Obama level charisma to overcome those oppressive forces it isn’t right, it isn’t healthy, it isn’t best for the citizenry but it is true and Hillary has like minus points in that arena. Unfortunately for pretty much all of humanity given the damage done by that orange fuck.
Hillary Clinton was the second most unpopular politician in the U.S., and she barely lost to the most unpopular politician in 2016.
Yes misogyny played a role (some Americans said they’d never vote for a woman no matter the party or policies) but she was also broadly unpopular going into the primary and election. Literally 50% of Trump voters in 2016 polls said they were voting mainly AGAINST her and not for Trump.
I'm so, sooooo sick of people blaming sexism and the voters for Hilary losing to Trump. She was an awful candidate. Her numbers dropped every time she spoke. She was an elitest who felt entitled to the nomination and the Obama voters. It seethed out in every speech and debate. Unlikable, detached from reality and a entrenched member of the establishment in a cycle that had clear signs people were sick of political elites.
I don't vote for people who display obvious contempt for me and my politic beliefs. I'd gladly vote for Warrend, or several other female democrats, Hilary is awful.
She was the completely wrong candidate for 2016, or maybe for any era. People were hungry for some kind of change to upend the status quo, and Hillary/Kain was just this very uninspiring status quo ticket that people only voted for out of fear of Donald Trump, but it wasn’t enough.
The Dem primaries did more to damage her than solidify her support and that was mostly due to the Democrats treatment of Bernie Sanders. I think she should’ve picked up Sanders as her running mate (assuming he would’ve gone for it). All that ill-will from the primaries would’ve instantly evaporated as the mainstream and progressive wings of the party could’ve actually come together. Instead, we got Cersei Lannister and some guy that nobody ever heard of before as the candidates. I still remember her dumb fake smiles when they dropped balloons at the Democratic convention when she got the nomination, just totally uninspiring.
