Why you should fall in love with the RP2350 | Dmitry Grinberg | Aug 8, 2024
dmitry.gr Introducing the RP2350 - Dmitry.GRDmitry.GR: Everything you ever dreamed the RP2040 would be is here - fall in love with the RP2350
> Dmitry Grinberg writes: > > > go replan all your STM32H7 projects with RP2350, save money, headaches, and time. As a bonus, you’ll get an extra core to play with too! "But," you might say, "STMicro chips come with internal flash, while RP2350 still requires an external SPI chip to store the flash". Hold on to your hats... there are now RP2350 variants with built-in flash! They are called RP2354A nd RP2354B and they include 2MBytes of flash in-package. The pinouts are the same as the RP2350A/B, for a bonus! Why two pinouts? Because the "more GPIOs" dream also came true! There is now a variant with more GPIOS, available in an 80-pin package. That’s right! It is epic! > > Read Why you should fall in love with the RP2350

OK, so what is up with POE hats?
Why do the vast majority of these seem to either block off the 40pin header or convert it to female header that's incompatible with further hats? And why are they full sized, despite having minimal circuitry on them? I can appreciate the ones that build in a cooling system, but that doesn't need to block off all the pins that aren't being used by the hat.
It seems like all this could be accomplished with a small board that doesn't interfere with everything else one intends to do with a Pi or Pi-clone. In fact, I'm surprised at the lack of built-in POE Pi boards out there.

SD Card fails to format using official SD Card format tool on Windows
programming.dev SD Card fails to format using official SD Card format tool on Windows - programming.devI don’t get a very detailed error message but it fails and tells me to try reinserting it. I’ve tried a few times. It fails at different percentages sometimes. Any thoughts or ways to get a more detailed error message? I have Mac and Linux too.

Anyone tried running jellyfin on a rasbpi?
i kinda wanna buy one to toss it in my backpack with a 2TB ssd full of movies and stuff to have a zero latency netflix anywhere i go.
im just a little bit confused because jellyfin docs say that its not a good idea at all to run it on a raspberry pi (or any other single board computer), so i thought i'd ask here if anyone has done that. i mean, just one user shouldn't be that much for a raspberry pi, right?

Advice wanted for using the Compute Module 4 for an embedded device
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/11673921 >I want to build my own portable E-Reader like a Tolino/Kindle in DIN-A5 format (I know there are similar projects, like the Open Book from joeycastillo, but I want to make my own just for fun). I'm considering using the Compute Module 4 from Raspberry Pi. That, at least according to my theories, would have the advantage of me not needing to create my own OS, and the availability of already existing EPUB/HTML (EPUB is essentially just HTML) & PDF parsers and UI libraries hopefully makes my life easier. I don't want to use a default Raspberry Pi, because I don't need all the ports and I want the size of the E-Reader to be not unnecessarily thick. > > The modules I need/want: > - Micro SD Card Reader for internal Storage (or just using eMMC Storage, have not settled yet on that topic) > - SD Card Reader (large/normal sized SD Cards), with a snap-in/spring mechanism (like with Nintendo (3)DS cartridges) > - E-Paper Display (e.g. a waveshare) > - USB-C Port for charging the battery (and maybe, if possible also file transfer and if possible maybe also to connect to a docking station) > - Battery > > What is your experience with the Compute Module (4) and do you have good resources for creating my own PCB extension module for the Compute Module you would like to share? Do you have constructive critique for my project idea?

SDM w/ copy-paste command for full disk encryption on existing Raspberry Pi OS systems
I'm exploring SDM (Raspberry Pi SD Card Image Manager) and found that the encryption method the creator incorporated in the CLI SD card burner is available as a stand-alone script for RPiOS (Bookworm). To be fair the whole project looks pretty interesting.
Tested with a fresh install of the default desktop distro, pasting the commands to pull in the script took care of all the heavy lifting. LUKS container is encrypted with Adiantum for best speed on pre-5 devices.
Standard Linux encryption, no Berryboot, no manually creating containers and setting up keys and crypttab.

Booting from a RAID1 volume on Pi Zero 2?
Hi, question for the group.
I have a pi zero 2 running the lite OS suggested by the imager. I’ve been able to create a RAID with 2 240gb SSD on the usb port. Even during a peak read/write stress test, the power draw for the whole system doesn’t exceed 800ma.
Anyhow, ideally I would like to boot from this volume and elimante the SD card completely, but have been stopped by not even being able to boot with the root set to the RAID and the boot dir still on an SD. I can get it to boot when /usr and / var are on the raid
Has anyone any insights on different things to try? Perhaps even a good reason this can’t work would free me from this fools quest so my project can advance?

> I've been looking into putting together a home office setup for remote development and stumbled upon this nice home automation project by David Zhang, where they use a Raspberry Pi with a customized num pad to control almost every day-to-day arrangement of their office, from desk hight, KVM input/output switching, lighting, all the way to tiling window management. Looks like they've also published the combination of Auto Hotkey, Home Assistant and ESPHome scripts in order to work, including links to dependencies: > > - https://github.com/davidz-yt/desk-controller > - https://github.com/jfedor2/hid-remapper > - https://github.com/phord/Jarvis > > Anyway, I'm looking forward to scripting a similar setup once I've gathered the general equipment, and figured other programmers might similarly appreciate the ergonomics in such an automated workflow. > > P.S. Any suggestions for a developer picking items for a new remote office from scratch would also be appreciated. E.g. office equipment recommendations like desk, chair, screen mounts, AV accessories.

Rate my setup: Raspberry Pi 400
cross-posted from: https://feddit.cl/post/807710
tl;dr: It has been two weeks using the Pi 400 as my personal computer. It's good enough for what I do, but when I need performance y connect it to my old laptop.
---
So, last year I bought a Raspberry Pi 400 and I did what I always do: absolutely nothing. It was kept inside its box getting covered by dust.
About two weeks ago I decided to clean the mess out of my desk. This desk is very small and I've got my work laptop, my personal laptop, a monitor and a lot of cables and stuff. So I put my personal laptop below the router connected by ethernet and put the Pi 400 on the desk.
It is way slower than my laptop, obviously. So when I need performance I make an ssh tunnel for vnc and pipewire, and got my laptop DE back.
I used
fscrypt
for the/home
partition, because I'm too paranoid to go unencrypted and it doesn't support full disk encryption. Also added a USB stick for more local storage, ciphered with the same tool.I don't play video games any more :sad-pepe: so I don't miss a graphics card in the Pi.
I bought it with the official Raspberry mouse included. But I have no idea where it ended lost.
So now this is my "setup" lol.

RaspberryPi 5 Review
www.tomshardware.com Raspberry Pi 5 Review: A New Standard for MakersThe first new flagship Pi in four years was worth the wait.
It looks like a big improvement over the 4 but sadly needs active cooling or it throttles under load quickly. It has a new form factor which requires a new case too. Still there are a lot of great additions that make it a good upgrade.
