What a 500-year-old shipwreck can tell us about how we age.

Archaeologists successfully raised the ship in 1982, along with thousands of articles and the remains of 179 crew members—all remarkably well preserved thanks to the anaerobic conditions of the shipwreck created by the layers of soft sediment that accumulated over the wreckage."

You never know where a town might pop up — even if it was established, and later abandoned, during the Bronze Age. The remains of a town being dubbed al-Natah was recently discovered in an oasis in modern-day Saudi Arabia. al-Natah was built around 2,400 BC and home to about 500 residents. Kmart enjoyed its heyday in the 1990s, when there were more than 2,300 branches across the U.S. It filed for bankruptcy in 2002, unable to stave off competition from Walmart and Target, but has limped on ever since. Earlier this month, the last full-size Kmart in the contiguous U.S., located on Long Island, closed, leaving just five on American soil. So, I've been reading "Late Victorian Holocausts: El Nino Famines and the Making of the Third World" by Mike Davis. And as he recounts famine after famine, each of which claimed millions of lives, I started thinking to myself: even granting the ludicrous assumptions of the anti-communists with the "Victims of Communism" webpage (and proposed memorial or something?), the victims of capitalism easily outnumber them. And I wasn't alone. Here, the author recounts how British colonial policy was responsible for 100 million excess premature deaths in India alone, over the course of a half century.

100 years ago, Andrew Comyn "Sandy" Irvine vanished when attempting to climb Everest with George Mallory, whose body was found in 1999. Last month, a team of climbers filming a documentary for @NationalGeographic found a preserved boot and foot, with a sock labeled "A.C. Irvine." Now, the search is on for the rest of Irvine's body — and the camera and undeveloped film he is said to have been carrying.
