Each instance funds itself. Some might try ads, but as of now, most are just funded by donations.
How can lemmy handle 5k+ signups per hour on Monday?
People just tend to gravitate to the biggest instances. Whatever is at the top of join-lemmy will probably be the ones hit the hardest.
