Hold my beer - Bungie
  • One of the worst instances was one year that virtually all "merit increases" were instead replaced with RSUs that vested in a year. When I had to bring that to my team and tell them what they were getting... Well, not a single one of us expected to see that money. Sure enough, layoffs happened and that potential money evaporated before any of us saw a cent. None of us were unprepared or surprised, but obviously still unhappy.

  • Yes, I am certain that was the case. It was the case in my examples too... Every now and then someone gets through and gets a couple units to vest, but the majority are gone and so is that compensation. It's disgusting.

  • I assume that stock was in the form of restricted stock units that vest over the course of a few years. I've seen this kind of thing play out at a few big tech companies over the years and have seen people lose literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in delayed payout.

They offer these as a "loyalty incentive" so the employee wants to stay while of course offering no loyalty in return when they decide to execute layoffs.

  • You'd just fire off an "ASL" to someone... It meant "age, sex, location". And then you'd decide to get on with a conversation or not. ICQ (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICQ) was an instant messaging program and had some super delightful sound FX for different things. I remember having an ICQ number (member ID) under 11k and it was cool somehow...

  • Those BBS days! Finding an "elite" BBS and downloading One Must Fall 2097 or Doom!

We played Legend of the Red Dragon and you could be killed while offline so you had to hire a guard or go hide... I woke up at 4a to beat my friends online to kill them first some days...

  • Oh man that progressive loading... Super pixelated then slightly less then ... Wait is that... No wait it's boobs then oh wait nope. Then your mom picked up the phone and it was lost anyway.

  • Well that's nostalgia right? This picture totally captures it and I swear I remember it on a magazine cover back in the day when Mortal Kombat 2 was coming out...

But I agree... The internet then could still be dangerous but it also felt so much more genuine? I was lucky enough to have dial up in the mid 90s, Google didn't exist, webcrawler was there and it just seemed like everything was possible. Whitehouse.com (not gov) was porn and what a discovery that was!

Man I found a "3d" chat website where I met someone from "Australia" and my parents got pissed bc I was going to get long distance charges! I wrote a paper in 8th grade how you'd be able to buy things online and pick them up in a vending machine, and there'd be multiple computers in a whole house and got a D because it wasn't based on facts!

Trying instill that wonder in my kids while being aware of contemporary concerns is such a conflict.
