Made my own Cincinnati chili

I do weekly baking challenges and decided to do Cincinnati chili since it's not a true regional delicacy unkess people argue about it anytime it is brought up. My friends have lived here in NW Ohio for 3 years and mever tried Skyline, so i brought it over to them. I forgot the oyster crackers, and they were hesitant to put the full mountain of cheese, but over all they enjoyed it.

A new study found traces of hazardous chemicals from the East Palestine disaster in 16 U.S. states.

Pollution from Ohio train derailment reached 110 million Americans

> On February 3, 2023, a freight train owned by Norfolk Southern carrying thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals derailed in the town of East Palestine, Ohio.. For days, flames engulfed the rail cars, which contained highly hazardous materials, including vinyl chloride and butyl acrylate, used in the production of plastic. A thick, tall plume of black smoke billowed from the accident site and forced the evacuation of thousands of residents. Now, scientists say that traces of this pollution was found across 16 states, spanning 540,000 square miles from Wisconsin to Maine to South Carolina.

> When [David] Gay [National Atmospheric Deposition Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison] and his colleagues began their research, they expected pollution in western New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. The reality, he said, was much more extensive. A low pressure system helped push pollution over parts of Michigan and Wisconsin. Pollution likely made its way into all the Great Lakes, except Lake Superior, he noted.

Beware of excessive holds at Love's Travel Stops

So I had to travel across Ohio yesterday to pick someone up unexpectedly. The person I had to pick up was waiting at one of those Love's gas stations and I need to put some gas in the car to have enough to return home. I have a sedan and put in about $30 worth. I check my credit card online to plan how much I need to set aside to pay off my credit cards and they placed a $175 hold for that $30 purchase of fuel. This post is to warn everyone else about these holds. There is a class action lawsuit on this as well.

A historical look back at the AP archives for May 4: an anti-war protest at Kent State University, the first group of "Freedom Riders" leave Washington, D.C., and Russia pounds supply line points in Ukraine.

Today in History: May 4, four killed during anti-war protest at Kent State University

With all the National Guard surrounding many university campuses nationwide, it came to mind how potentially similar outcomes could be to the infamous day on the Kent State University grounds…and wouldn't you know it?, the incident happened 54 years ago today!

> Today in History: On May 4, 1970, Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire during an anti-war protest at Kent State University, killing four students and wounding nine others.

> The confrontation, sometimes referred to as the May 4 massacre, was a defining moment for a nation sharply divided over the protracted war, in which more than 58,000 Americans died. It sparked a strike of 4 million students across the U.S., temporarily closing some 900 colleges and universities. The events also played a pivotal role, historians argue, in turning public opinion against the conflicts in Southeast Asia.

> The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Ohio’s largest newspaper, called editorially for “an immediate investigation and prompt steps to prevent a recurrence of the most tragic campus violence ever in the United States. […] “Many questions will have to be answered: Why were these people shot? Who shot first? How could these deaths have been avoided?

Let's all cross our fingers that history doesn't repeat itself. *** Remember…Parma spelled backwards is AMRAP! [email protected] ☆ [email protected] ☆ [email protected]

Public Service Announcement: Solar Eclipse Today

Citizens of the State of Ohio,

Today there will be a solar eclipse, an astronomical event where the Moon will pass in front of the Sun. Yes, during the day. While in most of Ohio it will be a partial eclipse, in that the Moon will leave a small slice of the Sun visible, in some parts of Ohio the Moon will totally block the Sun.

The important thing to remember is DON'T PANIC. Things to remember while the solar eclipse is happening:

  • It is not a sign or an omen of any kind. Eclipses are a normal part of astronomical events and have no "hidden meaning" in themselves. The sky will not come crashing down nor are "the gods" displeased about anything.
  • The eclipse has absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming Presidential election.
  • The ensuing darkness is not permanent. The solar eclipse will end after a short period of time.
    • There may also be a slight drop in temperature. This too is not permanent and will also pass. There is no need for Coleman lanterns, portable generators or any survival gear you may have on hand.
  • It is not a threat from any foreign agent. Unlike airborne chem trails, citizens can stay calm knowing that the Moon is an American territory.
  • As the effects from an eclipse are temporary, there is no need whatsoever for the following:
    • Human/animal sacrifice
    • Firearms, automatic or semi-automatic weapons, nor missile launchers, bazookas, grenades, or other military-grade weaponry you most certainly don't have stockpiled under Uncle Cletus' storm shelter. The Moon is too far away to hit, anyway.
    • Banging drums, setting off fireworks or any general noisemaking to "scare the Moon away"

*** All kidding aside, Ohioans…

An essential thing to remember is never look directly at an eclipse as it may cause serious and irrreparable damage to your eyes. If you're not already sick to death of hearing about this furshlugginer eclipse already, Wayne State University, here in Detroit, has a guide about viewing the eclipse today.

Scratch glass, turn blue, stay sick and remember, Parma spelled backwards is…

Capt. David E. Harris, first Black commercial airline pilot has died at 89

Apologies for the tardiness of this post. Capt. Harris passed away March 8, 2024 at the age of 89. Condolences to the surviving family.

> In 1964, David Harris broke the color barrier in commercial aviation when he was hired by American Airlines. Harris joined the company after serving as a captain in the U.S. Air Force flying B-52 bombers.

> "It's the greatest job in the world. I flew and flew and flew and was ready to fly more in my life," Harris told NPR in 2022. "I would have done it another 30 years had I not grown old."

> Harris first got hooked on airplanes as a kid growing up in Columbus, Ohio. He and his brother would visit Lockbourne Air Force Base where the decorated Tuskegee Airmen were stationed after World War II.

> His life was the subject of the middle-grade book, Segregated Skies: David Harris's Trailblazing Journey to Rise Above Racial Barriers by Michael Cottman.

Capt. Harris, the first African-American commercial airline pilot in 1964…it's astounding. At the risk of being repetitive, I again quote Chris Rock's observation…

> Interviewer: How do you feel like things have changed over the past couple decades?

> White people have gotten less crazy. That's all. [...] You can say “there's progress” and all of this. But when you say there's progress, but you're acting like what happened before wasn't crazy. > > “Oh, segregation, we've made a lot of progress and there's no more segregation”?— Segregation's retarded. It's crazy to think you're better than somebody, and they can't eat with you and segr— that's crazy! That's insane behavior! Just to think that, on any level— that's kind of insane! So, you can say “black people have made progress”, but to say “black people have made progress” would mean we deserved to be segregated. The reality is: white people got less crazy. > > My father didn't suddenly deserve to eat with people because he earned it. The people who were denying him his rights got less crazy. And that's what, progressively, has happened throughout the years. People are now getting less crazy about gay people. People are crazy.

Early voting has begun for the Ohio General Election, Nov 7, 2023. Both abortion and recreational marijuana are on it.

August was just the preamble, this is the big show. If you managed to drag yourself into the booth for that August thing, don't leave us hanging, now.

Here's a Columbus Dispatch article breaking down the situation a bit more professionally.

There is a constitutional amendment to protect the right to an abortion in Ohio on the ballot. It's a pretty big deal, so if you Voted No on Issue 1 a bit ago, get your booty in that ballot room for this one. All that was about this, so don't drop the ball.

Legalizing recreational weed is also on the ballot, I get the impression that it's an acceptable enough law, not like the previous one that was so bad that NORML was telling stoners to vote it down. This will NOT be a constitutional amendment, just a new statute, and can be tweaked later on, it's not as big a deal as Issue 1, abortion. If it wasn't for Issue 1 it would be the biggest deal on the ballot.

As always, the ballot will be full of little nobodies to vote for, except those little nobodies will end up controlling the situation in your literal backyard, so get a ballot and make sure the head of your local Klan isn't running for anything, vote him down if he is. Keep an eye on your school board elections. Look for "Shall we fund the local library?" type stuff. Expect variety.

Some of you will find yourselves, oh, choosing between 1 of 4 Republican sheriffs and similar situations. I don't want to hear the teenaged logic, vote for the least of 4 evils if you must. Next year, know their names better. One of those guys will be least likely to tell his troopers to shoot first, so try to vote for him.

Head straight to your county's election board website for a proper example ballot that YOU can expect to see, so you can do research. The state website will just end up sending you there, since each ballot is sorta personalized with stuff specific to your county, like school boards, funding measures and such.

It's not too late to send in your application for an absentee ballot, the cutoff to send the application is Oct 31, but don't quote me. It does take weeks to get a ballot in your hand, though, with lots of back and forth through the mail.

Early vote is the move, in my opinion. On a good day, it's a ten-minute process on a Tuesday afternoon. Done. Lookin at you, person with a service job and weird weekdays off. Go for whatever works, though.

Best of luck out there. Tell your friends to vote.

Approval Voting Recruitment Post

Hello all,

The way I see it, the kind of person willing to be an early-adopter is the kind of person with gumption. They're willing to deal with uncertainty, they're willing to stake out a claim based on principles, they're willing to put in a little extra work where it's needed.

Alight, maybe, maybe not.

But if that sounds like you, I want to recruit you to lead a referendum to switch Ohio or a local government in Ohio to Approval Voting.

If you haven't heard of Approval Voting before, here it is:

  1. Vote for everyone you like.
  2. Most votes wins.

That's it.

But OH BOY does it fix a lot of problems. Under Approval, it's always safe to vote for your favorite candidate. With Approval, you can't submit an invalid ballot. And best of all, Approval voting doesn't have spoilers.

Approval Voting helps show how much support every candidate in the race actually has, since there was nothing stopping anyone from voting for them. Everyone's final total represents their approval rating!

If this sounds like a good deal to you, let me know and we can talk about what it would take to switch your elections to approval. If you have any questions, fire away! I'm even perfectly happy to tell you what kinds of problems and limitations approval has, because all voting systems have problems and limitations!

P.S. I couldn't find any community specific rules and I'm not sure if this counts as advertising or spam per the site rules but if it does let me know and I'll delete the post.

P.P.S. I do actually live in Ohio, I'm not gonna go around recruiting people for projects in a state where I don't live.

Please go vote. Everyone's voice counts. Here is an official page where you can find out where your nearest vote drop box is, and where polling locations are, in Ohio.
  • It's also worth noting that some states have same-day voter registration, though not Ohio at the moment unfortunately. Some states started adding that more recently such as Virginia (implemented 2022) and Nevada (2019)

    https://www.axios.com/2024/10/31/voter-registration-election-day-2024

Put a caveat that New York, unlike the other states on the map here, only allowed it on the first day of early voting because of the quirks of the law they passed

  • Please go vote. Everyone's voice counts. Here is an official page where you can find out where your nearest vote drop box is, and where polling locations are, in Ohio.
  • I can understand your confusion. @[email protected] posted a link as to how to register to vote in Ohio 29 days ago.

This post was a way to make sure that people didn't forget to vote before the last day and to encourage those who were on the fence for whatever reason(s) to go out and vote.

  • Ohio Supreme Court clears ballot language saying anti-gerrymandering measure calls for the opposite
  • An anti-gerrymandering bill was introduced, this would take the power of drawing district maps away from a partisan committee made of all republicans, and give that power to a board of 15 people, including 5 reps from each party and 5 non-affiliated citizens.

The people who write the bill summary that appears on the ballot (republicans) worded it as "requires gerrymandering [...] in favor of the two largest parties". This clearly wrong summary was challenged in court, and the OH supreme court (republicans) has ruled this inverse description is legal, and will appear on the ballot.

We're in a position now where voters will have to vote Yes to 'gerrymander the district borders', to put this new bipartisan board in place.

  • Ohio Supreme Court clears ballot language saying anti-gerrymandering measure calls for the opposite
  • If this seems muddy and confusing, it's because it is. Working exactly as designed.

The Ohio Redistricting Commission is responsible for multiple maps that have been ruled unconstitutional/biased, Vote Yes to reform Ohio's process for drawing district maps.

  • Springfield? You here?
  • My wife is from Springfield. Granted she hasn't lived there in a few years (we are in Cincinnati). But she has friends that she talks with regularly and we visit Springfield about once a month.

The whole Haitian thing is kind of getting blown out of proportion according to her and her friends. Sure there has been a large influx of Haitian immigrants coming into Springfield. Yes there was a specific incident with a Haitian man who did not have a legal drivers license hitting a bus and killing some kids. Which according to most of her friends, is what they are most concerned about. However the whole pet, cat killing and eating thing so far, appears to be actual fake news. My wife said some of the Springfield officials (police and council folks) have all come out and stated the claims are baseless with no evidence supporting it.

Now that being said, the number of Haitians imported into Springfield is pretty big. Its not a huge town. Like maybe 50K people. I cannot find the article anymore but I think I read that it was close to 10K refugees are being held in Springfield. Which I'm no math wiz but I know a post-industrial midwest town is probably going to struggle supporting that large of an influx of people that quickly. Its anecdotal but I work in healthcare and have worked with a smaller clinic (Rocking Horse) in Springfield and I have heard they are/were struggling to keep up with the amount of immigrants using their services. But most of that seems to come from them just not knowing how our healthcare process works. Cool side note, they hired a Creole-Haitian speaking translator to help. The other big hospital a Bon-Secours Mercy location according to my one Trumper "friend" has been over run and people should not go there - but I'm chalking that up to just being folks going to the ER since they don't know where else to go.

Whenever we visit - it feels and looks normal. I swear the media would have you think a bomb went off and crazy gangs of Haitians are running around terrorizing people. I can assure you that is not the case. Go and visit. Have a pint or two at Mother Stuarts then walk over to have something to eat at Charlos.

  • All joking aside, assuming this is a public school,

Schools are not Constitution Free zones.

They are government institutions and they just can't limit free speech like this, for terms that are not disruptive or vulgar but that the administration simply don't like for personal reasons.

  • Today in History: May 4, four killed during anti-war protest at Kent State University
  • This is the best summary I could come up with:

In 1998, Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski (kah-ZIHN’-skee) was given four life sentences plus 30 years by a federal judge in Sacramento, California, under a plea agreement that spared him the death penalty.

In 2001, Bonny Lee Bakley, wife of actor Robert Blake, was shot to death as she sat in a car near a restaurant in Los Angeles.

In 2006, a federal judge sentenced Zacarias Moussaoui (zak-uh-REE’-uhs moo-SOW’-ee) to life in prison for his role in the 9/11 attacks, telling the convicted terrorist, “You will die with a whimper.”

In 2011, President Barack Obama said he had decided not to release death photos of Osama bin Laden because their graphic nature could incite violence and create national security risks.

Officials told The Associated Press that the Navy SEALs who’d stormed bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan shot and killed him after they saw him appear to lunge for a weapon.

In 2023, former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio and three other members of the far-right extremist group were convicted of a plot to attack the U.S. Capitol in a desperate bid to keep Donald Trump in power after the Republican lost the 2020 presidential election.

The original article contains 541 words, the summary contains 193 words. Saved 64%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
