Probably theme issue with Qt programs

[on Fedora 40 & 41]

Hi,

I don't theme Gnome and stay with the defaults. However at some point a few months ago I must have done something that broke the theme for Qt programs: KeepassXC, QOwnNotes, Nextcloud desktop client, all rpm. I tried the flatpak version of keepassxc, no issue

symptoms:

  • KeepassXC starts in light theme, even when system is using dark. If I reopen it, it switches to dark
  • font became very small both in KeepassXC and QOwnnotes
  • there's something wrong with the windows shadows
  • taskbar icons show 3 dots instead of the apps respective icons. This is fixed with Fedora 41 for Nextcloud only !
  • taskbar icons are unresponsive/won't work. half fixed with Fedora 41.

I tried a few things:

  • disabled extensions
  • reset all gnome settings
  • themed Qt with Kvantum (might have been a bad idea) (reverted)
  • installed a custom theme for the system (reverted)
  • removed some Qt stuff which seemingly weren't a dependency for anything

I also have a laptop running Fedora Gnome and don't have those issues.

What else could I try?

Thanks for reading!

how to configure gnome-shell to show keyboard backlight (and others) ?

Hi,

I needed to change my machine to a new one (tuxedo gen9), and I quickly installed my distro of choice (manjaro-gnome), and configured it as the old machine (I am very conservative on this... I do not like the change as it introduces some friction in my workflow... I even have the same wallpaper from the last 10 years, heh :P).

Turns out, I am unable to "see" some options of the gnome-shell that were present in my older machine:

  • keyboard backlight regulation (and it works, as I am able to regulate it with fn+space)
  • background apps

I would like to bave them back... any hint on what I can be missing ?

Two mitigations for crashes found throuh fuzz testing:

  • #1088, #1118 - Cairo is easy to crash by giving it path coordinates that are outside of the range that it can represent internally with its fixed-point arithmetic. Fuzzers usually produce SVGs with very large numbers for coordinates, which overflow Cairo's arithmetic. This is just a mitigation, not a complete fix: librsvg will now check if path coordinates are outside of Cairo's supported range, and it will not render shapes with problematic coordinates. However, fuzzers may still produce coordinates that are in range but that still make Cairo crash. I am starting to learn Cairo's code to see if this can be fixed gradually.

Dear Gnome,

Dear Gnome, I really love your system, yet as a connected user who recently tried your "online-account" i have a feedback to do with the hope you actually make a change or two

First can you change the way on how "file" work to allow a sync instead of a direct connection who force us to use third party app

Second for services that support it, can you please move from the old as hell mechanisme of app password by the user and use the modern way browser)

Thanks

Use Lilypad to Rearrange or Hide Panel Icons in GNOME Shell - OMG! Ubuntu

> You know how on Windows you can collapse icons in the task tray to keep them out of sight? Or on macOS, third-party apps like Bartender let you hide menu bar icons until you need them?

> Well, Lilypad is a new GNOME Shell extension that does the same thing, just for GNOME Shell. It gives you greater control over what top bar items are visible or hidden, and the order they’re arranged in.

...

> Well, with Lilypad you can hide those ugly [colored] icons out of sight — without losing the ability to use the functionality they provide.

> Finally, and most useful, you can use Lilypad to rearrange icons in the top bar, putting extensions applets and tray icons in the order you’d prefer.

Triple Buffering pushed to Gnome 48

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/19188902

> >Retargeted triple buffering to GNOME 48 instead of trying to upstream it in 47 at the last minute. Actually upstream wants it in 47 more than we do. But recent code reviews are both too numerous to resolve quickly and too destabilizing if implemented fully. So I’m not going to do that so close to release. There are still no known bugs to worry about and the distro patch for 24.10 only needs to be supported until EOL in July 2025. > > https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/desktop-team-integration-squad-updates-monday-2nd-september-2024/47587/2

Fancy Titlebars (for X11 / Xwayland apps that don’t use client-side decorations)

> As of today, Mutter will style legacy titlebars (i.e. of X11 / Xwayland apps that don’t use client-side decorations) using Adwaita on GNOME.

> Shadows match the Adwaita style as well, including shadows of unfocused windows. These titlebars continue to follow the system dark and light mode, even when apps don’t.

Linux Desktop Migration Tool 1.4

> After many months, I finally found the time to finish the GNOME desktop/application settings migration in the Linux Desktop Migration Tool and made another release. It basically involves exporting the dconf keys on the source machine and importing writable keys on the destination machine. I’ve also added some extra code to handle the desktop background.

...

> The list of migrations the tool can do is already fairly long: > - Migrate data in XDG directories (Documents, Pictures, Downloads…) and other arbitrary directories in home. > - Reinstall flatpaks on the new machine. > - Migrate Flatpak app data. > - Migrate Toolbx containers. > - Migrate ssh certificates, PKI certificates and nss database, GPG keys, keyring, GNOME Online Accounts. > - Migrate GNOME desktop/app settings

This branch implements support for transforming SDR (sRGB) to a HDR enabled output, while allowing HDR content to stay intact.

Roughly what it does is, when HDR mode is enabled via the experimental property, all the stage views that represents outputs where HDR actually managed to be enabled starts to composite in a linear variant of the target color space (which will be BT.2020) via an intermediate framebuffer. Each thing being painted should then transform its pixels to fit in this color space, using an EOTF, a color space mapping matrix and luminance adaptation.

GNOME 46 grey boxes

Solved:

The dev updated the theme (I am using Kripton https://github.com/EliverLara/Kripton) !

*** !

So I want to get rid of these grey boxes that got added to everything in the overview. They are in the bar as shown in the image, they are in every text in the overview search as well.

For my taste it is disgustingly ugly. And I can't find where I can make it go back to normal.

The gnome 44 (maybe 43 idk) hum alert sound was better

Folks, why would they even change it to whatever that new hum is. It sounds all like BEhWOE BEhWOE BEhWOE, the old one felt like spamming menu options in gta4.

Where is the old hum sound? WHere is that mp3? how do i slap that into the settings menu? I wish this was sarcastic.

Edit: Ok so its gonna be an .ogg file to go in "/usr/share/sounds/gnome/default/alerts/" , just need the old hum sound file

Edit 2: For anyone like myself, I found it here

Huge cursor with 200% Scaling (Libadwaita 1.6?)

Hey there, I don't know if any of you noticed something similar recently, but I have noticed my cursors have gone HUGE, like 2x what it should be at least. I think this is related to the affected apps using a beta version of Libadwaita 1.6, but I just wanted to confirm here before I create an issue in the repo. I use 200% scaling, GNOME 45, Fedora 39. Does anybody else have this problem? Thanks!!

How it should look (in Pods, firefox and most other apps)

!

How it looks in Ptyxis

!

How it looks in Adwaita Demo (latest update, which bumped the libadwaita version to 1.6)

GNOME Notes and CalDav

I'm looking into the possibility to move my personal notes from NextCloud to CalDav, it seems to have the possibility to store notes with and without dates and also todo lists. The todo lists can be used nicelly in HomeAssistant too.

But it seems that the GNOME Notes app doesn't sync to CalDav when you try to look it up on their website. Evolution does though, but it's so bulky.

Turns out gnome-notes does to some degree implement CalDav. In the perferences I can choose which is the primary storage location, and there the two calendars I have set up in Evolution show up.

And when I write a new note in the gnome-notes app, it even shows up in Evolution and on my phone! Great success! But for some reason when I create a note in Evolution it does not show up in gnome-notes.

  • GNOME Mutter Lands Support To Transform sRGB To HDR Outputs
  • This is the best summary I could come up with:

Adding to the growing list of changes that is making September's GNOME 47 desktop release quite a delight, the Mutter compositor has merged another great feature.

The work by Jonas Ådahl to implement color state transforms has now been merged for Mutter 47.

This work is abot supporting the transforming of SDR/sRGB content to an HDR enabled output.

Ådahl explains in the seven month old merge request: "This branch implements support for transforming SDR (sRGB) to a HDR enabled output, while allowing HDR content to stay intact.

Roughly what it does is, when HDR mode is enabled via the experimental property, all the stage views that represents outputs where HDR actually managed to be enabled starts to composite in a linear variant of the target color space (which will be BT.2020) via an intermediate framebuffer.

GNOME 47 is due out 18 September with many HDR/display and Wayland improvements among other enhancements that we have been covering on Phoronix the past several months.

  • After 14 Years of Cantarell, GNOME is Testing a New Default Font
  • It looks very Apple.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, but Cantarell has an iconic look to it that just screams "GNOME".

  • GNOME 47 Can Now Be Built With X11 Support Disabled
  • This is the best summary I could come up with:

Last week the GNOME 47 development code saw Wayland DRM lease protocol support for enhancing VR headset handling and separately was also accent color support for GNOME Shell.

Adding to the recent slew of changes landing for GNOME 47, the GNOME Shell and Mutter code can now be successfully compiled -- optionally -- without any X11 support or requiring any X11 build dependencies.

For those wanting to build a Wayland-only Linux desktop experience without carrying any aging X11 baggage, GNOME 47 will be able to optionally offer Wayland-only support without carrying X11/X.Org support.

That landed today along with this GNOME Shell merge request for being able to disable X11 support too.

In turn this closes a two year old issue tracker over making X11 dependencies optional on GNOME.

GNOME 47 is shaping up to be a very exciting desktop update due for release in September and will be found with the likes of Fedora 41 and Ubuntu 24.10.
