Why do a lot of people put a ground symbol (⏚) in their username (esp on Mastodon)?
Solved: It's used by members and/or supporters of Les Soulèvements de la Terre, a French radical ecologist movement disbanded by Macron's right-wing government.
Help remembering a song.
I need some help remembering a song. I only have bits of lyrics. It’s sung by a girl with a French accent. The parts I can remember are more spoken than sung. Talking about a cafe she says “the one you like on your street”. Another line is “after we would head to the cinema”. The song is directed at an ex she considers “stolen” from her and talking about dating and what could have been between them.
How do I resize this band
There are no arrows, no obvious pins, no pin latches. This band is different than all of the ones I've ever sized. Does anyone know how to remove links from this band?
Edit: user Septimaeus was correct in that it was a fixed link band. The link they provided helped in understanding what is requires to resize, and the band now fits my wrist like it was made for it. Thanks!!
How to make Pulseaudio put microphone on zero always on Linux ?
I've looked at suggestions on StackExchange and made some changes to files in /etc but after each login or reboot it is up to 100 % again in pavucontrol. On this computer I hardly ever use the speakers, and I want the microphone muted, always, so I guess I could even block list a few kernel modules for sound (which ones ?). But why can a desktop user not easily turn volume to zero, forever ?
Edit : Thanks all. It was not StackExchange but on AskUbuntu from where I tried some suggestions. I also tried muting audio in Pavucontrol but that didn't help between logouts and logins. Now I have set the default audio device in Pavucontrol to Dummy, and that works. I can still play sound from a video in VLC, but the microphone keeps muted.
Is there an app which can read everything on the screen for you?
My phone screen broke but everything else works fine except for the fact that I can't see what's happening on my phone, I was able to install an app which mirrors my phone and thus control my phone indirectly, but I was wondering if there was a way I could do basic functions like reading texts without seeing the screen. I mean, I am also curious what do people with visual disabilities use? Are there any apps like VoiceOver which help you read texts?
Having posts but does not show up
I was not sure where to post this, so apologies if this isn’t the right place and would like to know where I should go.
For a while now, I cannot see my own posts. Despite having made 33 posts.
It will show up as if I have never made one
I have this particular problem with several Lemmy apps: Avelon, Memmy, Mlem and Voyager.
I’m curious if other people have a similar issue or what I can do to fix this. I tried to log in/out & delete and reinstall app. Doesn’t work unfortunately.
I attached an image of what it shows me when, I try to check my own posts.
I can't find this post on finding CSAM on Lemmy
Yesterday, I was reading this post on an open source solution to detecting and deleting CSAM material on Lemmy. I was reading the post, then my browser crashed mid-read. I've been looking for it ever since, and can't find it. Can anyone link it?
Is there a community here for help with technical audio/video issues? I'm having trouble with my DSLR. Details in the post.
SOLVED:
So the mini HDMI cable was very loose. I used some jewelry pliers to crimp the male connector and made a tighter connection, now It works!
Pre-solve Update:
So it seems that the problem is jnfact the mini HDMI port on the camera itsself. If I hold it in VERY firm ajd at a specific angle, I can get it to send signal for 2 seconds before it disconnects again.
This is very sad, as a fix doesn't seem to exist, and I can't afford to send it out for repairs. Belgium bummer.
A friend gave me a Panasonic LUMIX GH4 a while ago. I got it working using the mini HDMI out on the camera and this capture card and through a powered USB hub (also tested through direct to PC). Now after refiguring my setup, I had to disconnect my camera from my setup for a few minutes to move things around. However everything was turned off before disconnecting. I plugged everything back in, and now my source on streamlabs displays my capture card as just a black screen. It registers that it is connected, but there is nothing going through. could it be a setting in the GH4 that got reset, the HDMI port on my GH4 is faulty, could it be the capture card? I'm at a loss and I am very distressed over this. Is there anyone out there, or a community who can help me?
Why do stories have such effect on us?
All religions have it's own myths, own stories, own set of values. And these are/were good stories, I mean, even though they are not true, they are certainly interesting. You won't feel bored by it.
Harry Potter has the same effect on people, like, why should I take Harry Potter seriously, why do I care what happens after Dumbledore dances with Snape (won't give actual spoilers :')
I mean, it doesn't make sense to me. Why do I care so much about a soap opera that I am watching. Harry Potter is the product of just one brilliant woman's imagination. It has no real value on my life. I have no real motivation to read that other than the fact that I like it and I want to know. Harry Potter is somewhat irrelevant to my life, than why does it or any other good story capture our imagination?
Why do I care what the next season of House M.D.
entails? Why? What should I care if he dies or lives? Why :')?
Will Linux Phones ever become commercially viable and decrease to a price point of 200-400 USD?
Don't say, hey android has Linux in it, yeah no, idc, I want to know how far we are from buying a Linux phone at a price point of 200 USD.
A Linux phone is one which is built completely on Linux, uses Linux apps and most important has a terminal.
I don't want a Linux Phone for privacy, although that's a great reason, but I want it for the freedom it provides me. Hell, I don't care if Android itself comes with a terminal and has similar features to Linux, I just want a Terminal which can install apps, where I can write commands and it will execute it. Complete Control on my phone and how it behaves is what I want.
I want to tell it when to sleep, when not to sleep, when to boot, when to edit a file and how, when to take a screenshot and what to do with it and where to save it, etc, etc. I hope you get the idea.
Where in history is the reference point of modern week day countdown?
I mean, if today i.e. is Sunday then someone long time ago should have said "Today will be Sunday" for the first time in a period from today that is multiple of seven. I was assuming that it was Pope Gregory XIII in October 1582, but looks like he is not. I failed in googling and duckduckgoing out the answer, so I ask for Lemmy's collective wisdom!
EDIT: so question is not about the origin of 7-day week and sequence of weekday names, but about the exact reference point (day) of today’s weekday countdown. From when have people stopped adding or ommiting any adjustment 'out-of-week' days (like in Babylon or Rome) and kept counting to seven till today? In other words, there should be a point exactly N x 7 days ago from which the 7-day countdown has not been interrupted. Or at least the earliest known day in history that everyone on Earth agreed upon as a reference point
EDIT 2: Solved by https://lemmy.world/comment/1852458 Thanks everyone!
Communities not visible in search
Let me give you an example:
-
there is a community on lemmy.world (whereisthisplace) - https://lemmy.world/c/whereisthisplace
-
I go on lemmy.ml and search for
whereisthisplace
-
my search parameters are: {Communities} {All} {Top All Time}, {Community: All} {Creator: All}
-
but when I search for (eg.)
Apple
I get "[email protected]"
is it because no one is subscribed form this istance?
