Feist - Let It Die (2004)

an old fave.

saw some more dumb musk-being-stupid twitter/X news and the song β€œLet It Die” came into my head.

Kevin Drew - Spirit If... (2007)

Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew's debut album - I've got this one on vinyl, y'all! Great album.

Social Distortion - Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell (1992)

It was between this and the self-titled 1990 album, but this one is the one that hooked me in so here we are...

Morphine - Cure For Pain (1993)

had a hankering... old school Wednesday for me, I guess.

https://songwhip.com/morphine/cure-for-pain

This band shouldn't work. A horn, a bass, a drum kit. Yet, fuck.

Islands - Vapours (2009)

One of my favorite albums, stripped down, fun, catchy, quirky, peak Nick.

G. Love And Special Sauce - G. Love And Special Sauce (1994)

Speaking of β€œsongs that make you think of Summmer”, G. Love WAS summer for me in 1994. β€œCold Beverages” specifically hitting that sweet spot.

An amazing debut album https://songwhip.com/g-love-and-special-sauce/gloveandspecialsauce

Songs: Ohia - The Magnolia Electric Co.

I love this album so much, but knowing that the songwriter Jason Molina had died from alcoholism adds a deeper sadness to all the lyrics. Once you hear it from that lens... woof.

Clairo - Immunity (2019)

Love this album.

Broken Social Scene - Hug Of Thunder (2017)

Speaking of Feist last night, here's an album that got me through 2017. While BSS has lots of great albums, Hug of Thunder really landed for me right when I needed it.

Feist - Multitudes (2023)

While Metal is one of my faves, I love Feist when she gets weird

Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride (2019)

I'm not a big Vampire Weekend fan, but when I put this album on in 2019, the weird out of sync acoustic diddy intro with the choir hit me right in the feels and I was hooked.

Love this album.

The Velvet Underground and Nico - The Velvet Underground and Nico (1967)

https://songwhip.com/the-velvet-underground/the-velvet-underground-and-nico

Another key foundational album for alternative music. How many of our favorite bands were inspired by Velvet Underground?

REM, Violent Femmes, Nirvana, where would music be without Reed?

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel 3: Melt (1980)

https://songwhip.com/peter-gabriel/peter-gabriel-3-melt

After his prog rock days at Genesis and before his truly epic mainstream breakthrough (and wonderful album) So, Gabriel was weird and alternative AF.

His third self-titled album in a row, melty face one, now "3: Melt" introduced me to Kate Bush who also showed up on So.

3: Melt is wonderful, weird, and dark album. Gabriel always followed his own path.

Golden Smog - Weird Tales (1998)

An old fave that kind of capped off the No Depression / alt.country movement of the 90s.

https://songwhip.com/golden-smog/weird-tales

"Featuring members of the Jayhawks, Soul Asylum, Run Westy Run, and Wilco, Golden Smog has in the past felt like a typical side gig: for die-hard fans only. Not anymore. Weird Tales is inspired top to bottom, whether on the four-song streak of ragged rock that fronts the disc or the singular moments that follow, like the strangely soul-funky "Keys," Jeff Tweedy's Woody Guthrie-ized "Please Tell My Brother," or Kraig Johnson's "Making Waves," a crushing story of suicide behind the bathroom door. Including new Smogger Jody Stephens (ex-Big Star drummer), Weird Tales is an emotion-rich trip of Midwestern rock tones, loaded with both individual spirit and collective vision."

Ron Sexsmith - Blue Boy (2001)

One of my favorite albums, found it completely on a whim in some listening station in some bookstore and has been part of my collection ever since.

https://songwhip.com/ron-sexsmith/blue-boy

Sexsmith, with a solid & appreciated career up in native Canada never quite crossed the border (even though some covers of his songs have gotten pretty far).

A great Sunday album, if there ever was one. Enjoy!!!

Lucius - Wildewoman (2013)

knee deep working on my own songs today, but Lucius popped into my mind randomly. Great album!

SinΓ©ad O'Connor - I'm Not Bossy, I'm The Boss (2014)

Not sure why I never really dove into this album, maybe it was my obsession with Faith & Courage that blocked me from even trying?

Well, it's a good time to make up for lost time.
