The Hummingbirds - Alimony

The debut single from a seminal Australian band of that era. This was released on the small indie label, Phantom Records and this video is for that release.

A few years later, it was re-recorded for their debut album that was released on rooArt an indie label that had a major label distribution deal. This is the video for the song in its re-recorded version.

The Pogues - Fairytale Of New York (Official Video)

Hitting number 2 in the UK Christmas chart of 1987, it's been consistently in the Top 20 at Christmas, several times since then. Yeah, yeah I know it's still not December yet, but seeing as I posted a Kirsty MacColl track today on a whim, I thought I'd follow up with this.

After leaving The Dream Syndicate, Kendra Smith was vocalist in Opal, the band that went on to become Mazzy Star.

This is the title track from their only album. Smith left the band during the album tour and was replaced by Hope Sandoval, who for some reason is in the video clip that is linked to this post.

The Chills – Brave Words (Spoken Bravely: The Remix)

Also known as Brave Words (2023 Expanded and Remastered) on streaming platforms…Songwhip link.

This re-issue of the 1987 debut album was due on Oct 15, but a delay meant that I only got the vinyl in my hands today. Even though I own an original pressing of this album (top left in the collage, above), I couldn't resist pre-ordering it, despite new vinyl being eye-wateringly expensive these days.

In my opinion, Side One of this album is absolute genius.

Watch the official music video for "Somewhere In My Heart" by Aztec Camera. "Somewhere in My Heart" is the twelfth single and biggest hit by the Scottish band. It was released as the third single from their 1987 studio album "Love". The song was produced by Michael Jonzun and written by Roddy Frame....

Aztec Camera - Somewhere In My Heart (Official Music Video)

I tossed up posting a song called The Crying Scene, from their next album, instead of this one. However, I decided to go with their most well known track. Either way, Roddy Frame, knew how to write a good tune. There are many dotted through their discography.

The Chills - Wet Blanket

yewtu.be The Chills - Wet Blanket

The video for the remixed track on the Heavenly Pop Hits compilation. The vocals were remixed. Original version vocal track appeared on the "Brave Words" album released in 1987.

The Chills - Wet Blanket

In the 40+ year history of The Chills, there has been one constant member, Martin Phillipps, and a long list of former members. Enduring through untimely death, addiction, poor health, Peel Sessions, top 10 (in NZ) records, multiple lineup changes, record label problems and more, they are without doubt one of the most legendary New Zealand bands of all time.

This song was on an album called Brave Words. A new remastered/expanded reissue is due this month.

I almost posted their first single, Rolling Moon, because its unreleased video was recently rediscovered, having been thought lost…but chose this one instead.

Straitjacket Fits — She Speeds

Straitjacket Fits - She Speeds

This is the first song I ever heard from this band. It was on a cassette compilation that I bought in about 1990 and from that moment I was hooked.

The two songwriters, Shayne Carter and Andrew Brough juxtaposed jangly 60's guitar and melodies on one had, with brooding, post-punk sensibilities on the other. This produced a couple of beautiful albums of great texture, lyricism and gravitas. However, the strain of having rival songwriters took its toll with a reshuffling of the band that led to Brough splitting to form the jangly combo, Bike. The remainder of Straitjacket Fits then pursued a more muscular sound for their third and final album, with a new guitarist.

She Speeds was voted #9 in a list of greatest New Zealand songs and the band was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame in 2008.
