Should we allow bot posts of chapters?

For a while the Mahoro-chan bot has been posting titles, but they're often not well upvoted or viewed and seem potentially more spammy among the titles that individuals are posting themselves out of interest. The bot was fine when this community was still pretty low on subscriber count but I'm thinking it might be past that time as engagement has gone up, and there were already other voiced concerns from members that even individual manga discussion posts were spammy.

I'm not a moderator anyhow so we'd either have to contact the bot creator (mentioned in the bot's profile) or have a moderator do so depending on the decision.

Edit: I think @man_zonder_poespas summed up what I was thinking in a much better and concise manner in his comment: "Personally I like the idea that the chapter is posted by a fan of the series so that they’re relatively likely to respond to comments on the chapter. Y’know, have the idea that at least one person is invested in the thing being posted."

I know we have engagement issues due to being new and very limited in size or if people are being scared off by just discussion posts. I do think that the larger the community, the better the chances of more discussion and more non-chapter posts since lurkers are always a majority.

Having some sort of pinned discussion posts as others have wanted, or a pinned awareness post to help drive more engagement I think would also at least be a sign for newcomers.

Are we allowed to discuss manhwas and manhuas here?

r/Manga on Reddit allowed it, but I don't see anything mentioned in the sidebar here about what's allowed and what's not.

Can we make a weekly "what are you reading" pinned message a thing?

Since this community takes heavy inspiration on what the r/manga sub was doing, why not take one of the best parts?

In case anyone is wondering what that is, I'm referring to this kind of threat: https://www.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/14p1m5o/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/

Also I did do one of this 3 days ago in case someone doesn't want to see the reddit, although reddit paints a better example of what I wish it was.

I feel the community would greatly benefit if the mods were the ones that did the post and it was a pinned message that changed every week.

Reasoning is that unless pinned, the post just looses relevancy quick, a lot of people will miss it and also and very importantly, people that come see if they want to join can look at a post where people interact through an entire week and were some interesting conversations and suggestions are born instead of only seeing chapter releases that gather 1 or 2 comments at most since not everyone is keeping up with this many series (especially considering how small the community is right now)

Just in case, I'm not criticizing chapter release discussion, I think they are great as they keep the community with constant new content. It's just that with the small current size of this community, most of them are not interacted with and people unfamiliar to what these posts try to accomplish will not really get the best impression of the community if every post is almost empty (case in point, the guy like 5 or 6 days ago asking what the purpose of the community is), it's just the curse that comes with small size for this kind of format.

What do you think of our bot, Mahoro-chan?

So it's been about a week since I turned on the discussion bot, /u/[email protected] (Mahoro-chan). This bot is a (lazy) fork off of AutoShonenpon, in which I hacked in a connection to Lemmy instead of Reddit.

Anyway, I'd like to get some feedback from the community.

  • Any bugs? Missing titles? Titles I should remove?
  • What do you think about the frequency of posts?
  • Feature requests?
  • Any other feedback?

(side note: since yesterday, federation has been painfully slow from my instance so it might take me a while to respond to messages)

Does anyone know how to get the thumbnail without having to take a screenshot and attach it?

Is there any interest in doing discussions of new manga chapters in here?

Basically what the title says.

I think that having discussions of the new chapters of currently publishing manga would help grow the community, or at least make it more active than what it currently is. Discussion of new releases is the best part of the anime/manga community, IMO.

Is this allowed by the rules?

I can try to keep up (maybe within a day of the chapter releasing) with opening posts for the most popular releases. :)

Also, please let me know if this kind of post is allowed in here or not.
