Weekly Book (Album) Club

TL;DR: Book (album) club is coming! First thread will be next week. First album will be Madvillainy by Madvillain (MF DOOM and Madlib)

Long Version: Next week I am starting a weekly book (album) club thread. Every week will be a different album and anybody who is interested can give it a listen, then share their opinions in the weekly thread!

I'm open to feedback but at least at first I am going to try to mix up the decade/style of the albums each week. I know I personally tend to get stuck in the "type" of hip hop I like. I want this to be a way for myself, and hopefully everybody else, to listen to stuff they might not have heard before or wouldn't normally check out. That said, my goal is to make sure we are listening to good albums so while the style of the music might vary, hopefully the quality does not. My current plan is not to use any album less than ~3 years old. Since I'm trying to only pick good albums, albums newer than that are likely still being discussed, mentioned and listened to semi-regularly.

I'll keep a running tracker at the bottom of each thread of the next few upcoming albums. That way if people want to listen to the album before the thread is posted, they can be ready. Alternatively, if people want to listen after it is posted, I hope we can have each thread active for at least a couple days after each post.

The Sidebar will also have a link to the most current version of this thread. I HOPE to keep that link up to date...we will see how I do on that.

I made this community to fill a need I had myself - with the hope that a few people might join and I would have a place to check every morning and be up to date. I did not expect to see this many people here this quickly.

I guess my thought is, how can we continue to grow this community? Lemmy at the moment has a lot of problems in terms of user experience. This community is hosted on sopuli.xyz, I chose this instance almost at random when signing up, but I felt the the people and rules here seemed good. This instance was one of the most popular when I signed up last week and it also doesn't seem to be too far into one of the political extremes like the other large instances. I think this gives us a good chance to be discovered by folks from other instances.

Personally, I don't know what my long term relationship with Reddit will be, as 90% of the time I'm on reddit I'm using Boost. And since you are all here I'm sure you all know the official mobile app can be best described as... obnoxious and frustrating.

How can we continue to grow this community?

Bringing HipHopHeads to Lemmy

Hello to anyone who might see this. With the potential impending exodus from Reddit, I wanted to start an r/HHH equivalent here. For the record I have no affiliation with the mod team on reddit - If you are a mod from r/HHH and want to be a mod here. DM me with proof and I'll mod you here as well.

For the moment there will not be any rules with the exception of Rule #10 from the HHH Sub which covers post titles and tags (as well as the Sopuli server rules).

New rules will be added as necessary or requested by the community. In general I think the rules on r/HHH are overly strict especially in terms of what is allowed to be posted on which days, what types of discussions are allowed, etc. So I don't expect to bring those types of rules here now or in the future unless there's a very good reason.

I'm going to try to have a weekly pinned discussion thread, as well as a weekly friday post for new music drops.
