Today I woke up to a very angry user who was the sole moderator of two communities here (c/gold and c/alchemy) who had reported a few posts and sent some PM's to a mod. (See screenshot, read from bottom to top)
Honestly, it hit us hard. Why would a user be so agressive against us? If they didn't want to see NSFW content they can hide in their profile, and unless we're mistaken it's hidden by default?
The mod team (currently just /u/reddthat and I) had a chat and thought about it. If a user PM'd any user with this type of abusive language we would immediately reprimand them. This is what we did.
So? I hear you say. Why are bothering to make this announcement?
This user clearly was under the wrong assumption about this instance, didn't know how to hide NSFW content, or has something against anime?
The question we want to ask our community are:
What would you have done in this situation?
What could we do to ensure no other users get the wrong idea?
We would like to get to know you all, work with you, and make it a place where everyone is welcome. We want to share memes that make us laugh, share images that excite us and find communities that make us feel at home. This user clearly did not understand that.
If I don't like something, generally, I'll just unsubscribe/block/whatever works to make it not show up. On the Fediverse, that usually works - it's not like Zuckville where you say "I don't want to see this" and the platform replies "Great! Let's jam 1000x more of it down your throat" ... that's the situation where I'll remove myself from the platform.
Having said that, I have a few suggestions:
If you make the 'subscribed' view the default view rather than 'local', that helps if you get someone who really doesn't like something in your local feed but still wants to use your instance. Personally, I use 'subscribed' mostly anyway now I've gone to the trouble of subscribing to a bunch of stuff I want to read.
With that anime porn... not my cup of tea and I don't generally look at them, but I'm not a prude and honestly I don't see the harm in anyone looking at what are essentially raunchy cartoon characters. But for your own safety and peace of mind, make sure you're well within the law, otherwise the Feds could come knocking - and no amount of anime is worth going to jail for :) Just saying.
I did, my dumb ass hard already changed the tab from active to new but somehow I missed the subbed/local/all option directly above it. I'm blaming dark mode and old eyes haha
:D
We have a light theme as well, if that tickles your fancy. By default it selects what your "browser theme" is (whatever that means). I'm glad its all sorted for you!
Here's what's worse, I chose the dark theme hahaha. Generally I prefer it but I think that particular button is just quite shaded on the settings page in dark mode and I skipped right past it for the brighter drop-down menu.
🤣 Gave me a good chuckle when I needed it.
Changing the default when a user joins would be detrimental to the initial user, as they would instantly see no content and I'm not sure how guests would see the instance in that case as well.
As currently, there is no way to preemptively subscribe users to certain communities. Maybe something for the Lemmy dev's to look into. But I think they are trying to fix the bottlenecks in the database server at the moment.
Thanks for the good ideas regardless and I'm glad you are here!
