Elon Musk-led X Corp. has commandeered "@music" from a long-time Twitter user, software developer Jeremy Vaught.
X terms of service has right to take back username. X ported his followers over to new account at least, he said. Vaught is still using X, though he did set up account on Threads and Mastodon.
I honestly don't understand why anyone still has an account on that platform. Surely it's obvious that the company is going down in flames and that Musk is going to outright steal users and handles from content creators. Inertia is not a good reason to fall victim to Sunk Cost Fallacy. It's done. Leave.
Almost none of the people I follow on Twitter are on Mastodon and almost none of the people that follow me are there either. I'm not on Twitter because of the platform. I'm there because of the people on that platform. My strictly curated feed haven't changed during the past few years no matter how hard people here are trying to convince me that Twitter has gone to shit. Maybe for you it has but I can't relate. What ever Elon is doing happens in a corner of Twitter I'm not spending my time on.
It's also the only platform where I've managed to grow any kind of following. It's much nicer posting my content somewhere people actually see it unlike on places like Instagram which is just shouting into the void. The only change I've made is switch from the Flamingo app to browser because they killed 3rd party apps just like reddit.
That's what the agument essentially boils down. I'm having a good time there but people still keep telling me I should leave. Personally I encounter significantly more toxic behaviour on Lemmy compared to Twitter. I'm still here too.
I'm just saying all the things you listed don't matter in the long run. Unless you can specifically name the people you follow or follow you and all the other things you mentioned, its not important and can be easily replaced.
Yeah I'm sorry but that's just not true. Mastodon has 7 million users and Twitter has 400 million. It took me a literal decade to build the following I now have on twitter. That's not easy to replace and frankly I don't even see why I should.
You yourself just said that almost all the people you follow and almost all the people who follow you on Twitter are also on Mastodon. That being true, there's no difference if you want to use federated services instead. But you should hike your own hike. If Twitter is your jam, enjoy it.
What are you arguing for exactly? Because if it's that social media is not important then I 100% agree with you but what does that have to do with leaving Twitter for Mastodon?
I could but it's quite niche community I hang in which is not present here. I'm not active on twitter either but when I feel like posting something that's where I go to
