Aren't all soldiers signing up to kill people for money, yes he's on the opposing side and we can hate him for supporting a fascist war machine that's trying to annex a soverign nation; but I don't see how we can hate him for the simple act of being a soldier unless we're prepared to say that about all of our own soldiers as well.
Some, probably most, sign up to protect their homeland not to kill lots of people. I think such motivation would get you kicked out of some armies, in fact. No one wants a psychopath in their squad!
Don't forget make money, get out of their shithole small town and be a cool action hero guy. It's a rare soul that's purely motivated by ideology or identity.
In context, I think OP meant "for money and considering nothing else". If you're not with a sketchy mercenary company you can maintain a certain level of expectations about who it is you end up killing. This guy apparently wasn't worried about that.
