YSK: Your Lemmy activities (e.g. downvotes) are far from private

Edit: obligatory explanation (thanks mods for squaring me away)...

What you see via the UI isn't "all that exists". Unlike Reddit, where everything is a black box, there are a lot more eyeballs who can see "under the hood". Any instance admin, proper or rogue, gets a ton of information that users won't normally see. The attached example demonstrates that while users will only see upvote/downvote tallies, admins can see who actually performed those actions.

Edit: To clarify, not just YOUR instance admin gets this info. This is ANY instance admin across the Fediverse.

  • ITT: we muddy the waters and people get scared because they don’t know how deep they are anymore despite standing in it

    • Very true, and I'd much prefer everyone having access than only Mods/Admins having access. If anyone can see, then everyone should be able to see. Down with internet feudalism!

      • perhaps somewhere in the middle is best, I’m for the against the existence of this ability, but I’m also for the difficulty to achieve this ability to become unachievable for those who don’t already have a good standing with the community that they built.

Overall, I want the ability to possibly exploit this visibility intertwined with challenges that push equal or greater improvement in the community. This would mean overall benefits for the ecosystem even if damage is to come. Counteract and neutralize where possible sort of thing

(This is very broad and general overall, hopefully it was at least semi followable lol)

Edit: reworded some stuff and fixed some errors

    • Well said.
