I feel like now he would have been expelled by the school and arrested
If they are holding a Christmas pagent with kids dressing as the wise men in the story of the birth of Jesus it is almost certain those kids are in a private school.

Yep. I remember the entire elementary school gathering in the gym once a year to sing Christmas carols. Including the super religious ones.
Is that a high class thing in the US? We did that in Eastern Europe. Granted, I was one of the shepherds, but that was way cooler because I had a big stick.
No, it's weird because typically religion and schools are separate.
