Trying to get certain emotions is annoying

My recommendation is not to only prompt the exact emotion that you want. I've had a lot of great luck by thinking of moments that might evoke those emotional states and put your characters in them. "Getting a new puppy" might create a more overjoyed state but will also generate a puppy. Just thinking like a director rather than a painter or a photographer gives me more interesting results.
