Fun fact: Back in the day RIF paid for the pleasure to use the reddit name and spez killed the deal upon taking over.
I do remember when its name was "Reddit is fun" and then was renamed to "RIF is fun" but never questioned why. Your explanation fits the current mess.
I always wondered why the app was called RIF is fun. I always tried to search for reddit because I thought the app was called Reddit is Fun.

I had thought RIF was illegally using the trademark, even so I didn't care who was in the wrong, RIF was a godsend even then, I wouldn't be using reddit on phone without it. Grant to learn that RIF tried to do good legally until spez came along.
