But while conference may have pressed pause on expansion plans for now, it may not be done in the future as it continues to do due diligence on what teams may be a fit long-term, with the league considering Clemson and Florida State from the ACC as possible fits at some point, according to a media report.
That speculation includes the caveat that the SEC may also consider North Carolina, but would not contemplate adding Miami, as the league would not want more than two schools in the same state.
I know I’ve read this same basic article a hundred times on r/cfb but I figured that I might as well bring this debate over to /c/cfb.
While it is bittersweet to leave the ACC as a founding member, the writing is definitely on the wall in terms of potential earnings. Clemson’s only hope to keep up with Big 2 (SEC/B1G) teams financially will be to get out of the ACC grant of rights and get picked up by one of those conferences. Florida State is definitely in the same boat.
That speculation includes the caveat that the SEC […] would not contemplate adding Miami
Miami just became an AAU member this month so I guess they’re going to the B1G.
Was really hoping my Hokies might find a landing spot, but with the SEC seemingly limiting themselves to two schools, and with us not being AAU members it sounds like our options might be limited. Definitely would be a different conversation 10 years ago.
Miami I think is in kind of the same boat. Are they as attractive a brand anymore?
As weird as it might sound, VT might be a good fit for the Big 12 assuming a worst case scenario. On the bright side, the Big 12 has had two teams (Cinci and TCU) make the playoffs since the last time an ACC/PAC team made it. I think the PAC falls apart once Oregon and Washington finally leave and the Big 12 will remain as the solid #3 FBS conference. Not ideal but I think VT still has a landing spot there.
I’ve heard a few people say before that Miami isn’t prioritizing athletics. I’m sure having the Dolphins in town and the U not being as dominant as they were is leading to some apathy among alums/casual fans in the area.
