what is a chain mail bag used for and why use it over a simple cloth/fabric bag?
oh i didn't clarify! it's a old time coin purse. I just grabbed this photo from a search.
I assume the reason it would be metal instead of cloth is durability and strength. You'd want it to be strong to hold a lot of metal coins and not break while traveling on foot/horseback.
You don't want someone to cut it off or cut the bag so your money falls out.
