I wish a higher moral authority than the boss of the Catholic church criticized Trump, but at least it's something.
Last count there was about ~1.3 billion Catholics (back in 2021), not counting other denominations that recognise the Pope. As far as moral authorities go there aren't many that have that much sway.
Just because lots of fools are fooled by an illegitimate moral authority doesn't give the authority any moral legitimacy.
For proof of this, I remind you that half of America trust Trump, and you wouldn't call Trump trustworthy would you?
