TIL British actor David McCallum recorded four albums for Capitol Records in the 1960s. Three of the albums were entirely instrumental. One of the instrumental tracks was sampled by Dr. Dre.
Here is his instrumental track The Edge, the one Dre sampled. You'll probably recognize what he sampled almost immediately even if you're only barely aware of his work (like me).
Lol you'd already have to be paid to release that many albums of just instrumentals. This was before mixtapes and would've actually cost a pretty penny to make back then.
Also wasn't there a big thing about artists like this not getting paid for their samples being used? I remember a story of the guy who made the drum beat sampled in dozens of really popular songs that never saw a dime.
Ah yeah, the Amen Break from Amen, Brother by the Winstons. There was actually a fundraiser for the guy a few years back, I threw in a few pounds, as his work has been the basis of a huge part of my musical taste!
