Only regarding the episode indexing, not a new show in the same sense as Classic Who compared to nuWho. That was a full-on reboot of the series. This… represents a shift between platforms and the marketing efforts to appeal to new viewers unfamiliar with Doctor Who.
Apparently, Disney believed that starting at S14 would be off-putting to potential new viewers to the show (feeling that catching up would be too daunting), so they reset it to S01 for their streaming service.
Edit:
That is - according to both Disney, the BBC, and literally everyone else ever asked about this with any “official knowledge” - is the only reason for the season number reset. Just a marketing decision for putting the show on D+ as a fresh, new series for the majority of D+ subscribers.
Yep, but even my softwarre separates it as a different series. I understand all of that, but it is still, for all intents and purposes, a new Doctor Who series.
I did not know that! I checked out about 2 seasons into Capaldi after watching the new series religiously and haven't returned primarily due to difficulties finding places to watch it, although now more due to young kids who i have to schedule around
