Please suggest me good books that cover the history of how various branches of science have developed or on history of development of various technologies or on development of various standards (UTC, metric etc.). Books covering combinations of two or all three of these are also preferable.

Preferably set in the real world, though it's not a hard requirement.

Fiction or biography are both fine :)

Fragile Ego ?

I want to self improve, get rid of my fragile ego, but there seems to be no book relating to that issue. Books to control your overinflated ego everywhere. Maybe I should change my search terms to "low self-esteem", but that's not the same thing. If anyone could recommend something !
