Looking for a specific turtle turnover
In this technique, you reach between uke's legs, grab their belt, and pull it straight up to turn them over. Does anyone recognize this, and if so, do you know if it has a name or if there's a video of it floating around?

Book recommendations
Recently got injured. I'm missing judo a lot. Can you please recommend some good judo books to read, or even sports books in general?
On my list I have Mind Over Muscle by Jigoro Kano and Angry White Pyjamas by Robert Twigger.

How to keep nails from getting detached from the nailbed
I cut them short. I also tried putting tape on my fingertips but it comes off within 5-10 minutes. Is there anything else I could try, maybe a different way of taping? Any advice would be appreciated 🙏

First Shiai!
I got my butt kicked by some cool and friendly people. Getting thrown within 10 seconds cracked me up :D

Broke my fifth toe
I went for an uchi mata but accidentally kicked uke's shin. The proximal phalange is in three pieces, and my coach told me to buddy tape it and keep practicing. My classmates have been very considerate of my injury.
I just wanted to share.

the Judo movie "Tatami" premiered today at the Venice film festival
This was the movie that my sensei helped choreograph and trained the actress for. So far the reviews seem to be positive. It seems like they got Neil Adams to commentate in the movie too.

Preparing for first tournament
Hi all, I will be participating in my first local tournament in ~3 weeks. Planning to ask my sensei for advice this week but thought I'd ask here too :)
What are the most important things to focus on between now and then? Any tips for nerves and "mental" preparation, like things to do the day before/morning of? I am planning to ask for grip fighting practice and maybe 1-2 good entries for my favorite throw, is there anything else you would recommend?
Thanks.

tsurikomi goshi vs seoi nage
Tsurikomi goshi and seoi nage feel very similar. Any suggestions for when to choose one over the other?
-
Note that the layout is a bit unintuitive - you have to swipe horizontally on each section to see all the exercises.
Feel free to chime in with any exercises you're partial to that aren't covered here :)

>100 Subscibers and Touching Base
Hi all!
We have just passed 100 subscribers (massive number I know haha) and I thought it would be a good opportunity to touch base and see what we should do here to increase engagement.
As most of you likely know, I am still a mod over at "the other site" and, though I have strong feelings about what they are doing as a company, I feel the community there has a lot of good people so I intend to continue to perform that role (the "glorified janitor" as one user kindly pointed out).
Having said that, I don't want this place to just be a mirror-universe version of r/judo. Lemmy and similar platforms are built around community first and foremost, and I would love to see that side of things grow.
Access to automated mod tools etc. is obviously much more primitive over here (feel free to leave suggestions if you have any) so automated posts and such are likely to be more difficult for now, but is there anything y'all wish we could do here?
Obviously one of the big draws of r/judo is the amazing wiki that Geschichtenerzaehler has put together and I have no intention of stealing that for here (though I'd be happy to copy it here if he was okay with it of course). We don't have anything like that, however I'd love to hear what you all think we could do to make this more than just a dumping ground of a few videos here and there.
Cheers!

I Helped Teach!
I'm a green belt and I was allowed to teach a new white belt his first throws. It was so exciting and rewarding when he pulled off a good ogoshi.

One of my students sent me this link and I think I'll be digging into the details for ages.
Watching this is like seeing "my game" but actually performed properly haha
Great use of similar entries to set up throws in different directions, depending on uke's reactions.

Bullet Proof Your Knees & Unlock The Explosive Power Of Your Soleus Muscle With These Mobility Standards

According to this guy these mobility tests/exercises can protect your knees.
Also increasing ankle flexibility allows development of the Soleus muscle, which he claims has the strongest pull of any muscle in the body.
I've had bad ankle mobility for years and noticed an immediate improvement in range after just 1 set (on either side) of the first exercise demonstrated.

On episode 82 of Tatami Talk. We open up congratulating Anthony on getting his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blue belt. We get his thoughts on reaching a color belt rank and what his goals are in the future in BJJ. Then we talk about the European Judo Union putting out their referee exam online for the public to take. Anthony gives us his thoughts and experience taking the test and how he did on it. We end the episode talking about a very hard question for any martial artist. Whether it's a striking or grappling martial art. How to choose when to leave, move on or transfer to a new dojo. What are some of the things to consider before you leave? Should you talk to your instructor before you decide to go? Is it possible for you to train in the same martial arts, if you do decide to leave? As well as some other hard questions you must ask yourself when choosing a new dojo.

Have you met a judoka who smokes?
I just realized nobody in my dojo smells like cigarettes. It makes sense, and I'm curious what others have experienced.
-
How long have you been practicing judo? What got you into judo?
Really curious to know :)
I had been practicing 3 years, but had a 6 year pause, but started again last year. Got into judo 'cause my big brother did judo.

Judo Lemmy 101 / What Do We Wanna Do Here?
In anticipation of Reddit's eventual arrival at the end of it's product life cycle, what do we want to see here in Lemmy.world?
Here's an image summarizing how Lemmy works
Here's Lemmy's Starter Guide post
r/judo had a weekly white belt thread that I think we should carry over. Perhaps we should do other weekly topics? Maybe a technique of the week?
Also is there anything we can do for re-occurring sub topics like nogi, newaza/bjj, self defense, and getting started / first class expectations / club evaluations?

What rank are you in Judo?
Because we don't have flairs here (at least not yet), I thought it would be fun to know :) I'm 4th kyu
-
What are your tokui wazas?
I personally like harai goshi and tai otoshi, but my newest favorite throw gotta be sumi gaeshi from this position.
