  • Discussion: Desert Skies S1 finale + Binge vs episodic

I listen to a lot of audiobook and podcast for many years and has since branch out to audio drama. I discovered Midnight Burger a few months ago. Caught up with all the episodes and now patiently waiting for the monthly releases.

While looking for recommendations for show similar to Midnight Burger, I came across Desert Skies. I love the humour and the wholesomeness. It's amazing that one person was responsible for putting together this whole show. I binged all the available episodes + Desert Skies FM. I had to wait almost a month for the last episode of season 1.

Now that the season finale came out, I found only the last few minutes of the episode feel cohesive with the rest of the series.

Was there a drop in the quality of the writing of Desert Skies S1 finale or was it just me? Did the month long wait lead to loosing the continuity feeling?

I have listened to 2-3 episode of Midnight Burger as they came out each month and did not have the same issue.

Do you prefer to listen to audio drama that has been completed or do you not mind waiting for the weekly/monthly episode drops?

  • [REVIEW] Lucy Gibb Smith - Darkstead

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/248530

    > # Nothing's right in this town... > # > A brilliant show! Tons of characters, all voice acted incredibly well. The production quality is incredibly high, and it really elevates the show. > > That being said, the production quality is not the best part of the show, the plot is. The mystery is delightful, the drama is enthralling, and the occasional comedy is very much appreciated. > > It's described as a "fantasy crime procedural", but really the fantasy element feels secondary. Don't get me wrong, it's front and centre in the story, but it also doesn't... Matter? It's an element of the story, but it would work without it. It's a tool to boost the horror and to justify some actions and prejudice in the plot, it's a justification for horrible things, but not a driving force exactly. > > I love the way the show explores human nature and emotion: fear, desperation, regret, isolation, hope, determination... This is what moves the story. Blind hatred versus Total selflessness, truly a battle for the ages. > > And as it ends, I am overcome with a want for more. > > That's the one thing that keeps the show down; the amount of loose ends left at the end of the short 8 episode run-time is almost UNBEARABLE. There's so many things I want to know, and I fear I may never get to find out the secrets of Darkstead. > > I guess that's the issue with building up such a great setting with such compelling characters in such a short time... There's just so much left to explore after you're done. > > *** > Rating: 4/5 > Listen on Google Podcasts!

  • My Favourite Audio Dramas!

    I love audio dramas.

    I LOVE AUDIO DRAMAS!

I'd like to recommend some of my favourites to anyone that might be reading this.

    • The Magnus Archives: a horror anthology podcast with incredible narration and perfect atmosphere. It's scary, creepy, disturbing... It hits all the right spots. It even has a plot across the 4 seasons!
    • Ghost Wax: also a horror anthology, and rather similar to The Magnus Archives. It differs in the setting, the cast, and the way the overarching story progresses. So really it's very different, but it's also very similar... Regardless, it's creepy and disturbing, disconcerting in just the way you want it, while also finding the space to explore the more complex emotions of the characters.
    • Tumanbay: that's right, historical fiction! It's a compelling story with interesting characters. There's interpersonal and political drama aplenty. It's... Beautiful, and has an EXTREMELY high production value (really, it's insane how well produced this is).
    • The Bright Sessions: science fiction isn't usually my cup of tea, but The Bright Sessions does it very well. The sessions are very interesting, compelling really, and I love how we grow to feel a certain way about Dr. Bright as the series progresses...
